Washington Reports First US Bird Flu Death of 2026
Health officials report a fatality in Yakima County following exposure to infected dairy cows, though the public risk remains low.
A resident of Yakima County, Washington, has died from complications related to avian influenza following a severe illness tied to exposure to infected dairy cows, health officials announced on Sunday. This marks the first recorded human death from the virus in the United States in 2026.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has tracked bird flu cases in more than 70 individuals nationwide since the virus initially spread to dairy cattle in February 2024. Most affected individuals have worked on agricultural properties with infected cattle or poultry, experiencing mild symptoms from dead-end infections without documented human-to-human transmission.
Local health authorities in Yakima County stated they are closely monitoring individuals who came into contact with the patient to prevent any further spread. The patient, who had underlying health conditions, was hospitalized on October 31 after coming into contact with infected cattle and passed away the following day.
In addition to this fatality, health district officials confirmed that a third person exposed to infected cattle in Washington has tested positive with mild symptoms that did not require hospitalization. Since October 8, authorities have reported 33 dairy herds infected with the H5N1 virus across the state.
State health agencies are actively urging dairy workers to utilize personal protective equipment and promptly report any symptoms. Meanwhile, researchers continue to explore countermeasures, including recent studies evaluating mRNA vaccines to curb outbreaks and reduce viral shedding in lactating dairy cattle.
Federal and local health agencies maintain that the overall risk to the broader public remains low, as all recorded human cases have resulted directly from animal contact rather than community transmission.
