Will Lankshear Leads Middlesbrough to Dominant 5-1 Victory Against Bolton Wanderers
After a recent draw, the prolific striker returned to the starting lineup to help propel his club to the top of the Championship table.
Middlesbrough secured a commanding 5-1 victory over Bolton Wanderers at the Toughsheet Community Stadium, a result that briefly moved the club to the top of the Championship standings. The performance marked a significant recovery for manager Kim Hellberg’s side following a frustrating 2-2 draw against Cardiff City just days prior.
The match saw the return of star striker Will Lankshear to the starting lineup. Hellberg had previously faced criticism for choosing to rest the forward during the Cardiff City match, a decision that nearly cost Middlesbrough points before Lankshear came off the bench to secure a draw. His return to the starting XI against Bolton proved pivotal as he continued his impressive scoring form.
Middlesbrough dominated the first half, establishing a 3-1 lead before the break. The scoring began with a goal from Malanda, followed by two strikes from Lankshear, who demonstrated his clinical finishing ability. Despite a late first-half goal from Bolton’s Bair, Middlesbrough maintained control of the tempo and tactical flow of the game throughout the contest.
The second half saw Middlesbrough extend their lead further, with Cozier-Duberry finding the back of the net to make it 4-1. Lankshear capped off his performance in the 78th minute by tapping in his 12th goal of the season after receiving an unselfish pass from teammate McGree. The victory was a comprehensive display of attacking football, even as heavy rain began to fall late in the match.
Bolton Wanderers, despite their recent positive results against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Southampton, struggled to contain the Middlesbrough attack. Bolton goalkeeper Bazunu made several notable saves throughout the evening, including multiple efforts to deny Lankshear and Conway, but the pressure from the visitors proved too much to overcome.
The win serves as a strong statement for Middlesbrough as they continue their campaign in the Championship. With Lankshear now firmly established as one of the league's most prolific scorers following his summer transfer from Tottenham Hotspur, the club looks to maintain its momentum in the coming weeks as they compete for the top spot in the division.
