Actor William Shatner led heartfelt tributes to his longtime colleague and fellow Star Trek icon Sir Patrick Stewart, who died on Wednesday at the age of 86. Stewart passed away at his home in Los Angeles surrounded by his family, following what representatives described as a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer's disease and Lewy body dementia.

Shatner, who famously portrayed Captain James T. Kirk in the original 1960s television series alongside Stewart's later portrayal of Captain Jean-Luc Picard, took to social media to express his grief over the loss. Calling it a heartbreaking week, the 95-year-old actor praised Stewart as a magnificent friend, colleague, and performer who brought immense dignity to both the stage and the bridge of the USS Enterprise.

“Captain Picard stood for the best of us, and so did the man who played him. I was filled with affection and admiration for him and his work. My heart goes out to Sunny and his family. He will be deeply missed,” Shatner wrote on social media.

Stewart's career spanned more than six decades, earning him global acclaim across multiple iconic franchises. Beyond his defining role in science television, he became beloved by superhero film fans for bringing Professor Charles Xavier to life in the X-Men franchise, appearing from the original 2000 film through subsequent cinematic installments. Marvel Studios and fellow X-Men co-stars, including Hugh Jackman, also shared emotional memorials honoring his immense talent, generosity, and legacy.

Jackman shared his sorrow over the loss, noting that he learned a great deal from working alongside him. Other figures from the entertainment industry, politics, and sports, including Stewart's lifelong favorite football club Huddersfield Town, also honored the actor's profound cultural impact and dedication to his roots.

The actor's passing comes ahead of his posthumous appearance in the upcoming Marvel Studios film Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for release in December 2026. While Marvel has confirmed his return to the role of Professor Xavier, the studio has not yet detailed the extent of his screen time in the anticipated project.

Meanwhile, Shatner continues his own eclectic late-career ventures, preparing for an upcoming musical tour and live performances with his heavy metal band, William Shatner and The *uckers, in support of their forthcoming album.
