49ers Star Christian McCaffrey Suffers Thigh Injury in Loss to Falcons
San Francisco running back Christian McCaffrey exited Sunday's game with a thigh injury but expressed optimism about his health moving forward.
The San Francisco 49ers suffered their first loss of the 2026 NFL season on Sunday, falling 29-20 to the Atlanta Falcons at Mercedes-Benz Stadium and dropping to a 6-1 record. Compounding the defeat, star running back Christian McCaffrey sustained a thigh injury during the first half that briefly sidelined him before he managed to return after halftime.
McCaffrey began the contest in dominant fashion, providing a spark for the San Francisco offense. He capped off the game's opening drive with a soaring leap into the end zone for a touchdown, accumulating 29 rushing yards on four carries and 45 receiving yards on three catches in the early going.
However, heavy hits from the Falcons defense and a sudden physical setback forced the All-Pro playmaker to the sideline. He missed the entire second quarter while dealing with discomfort in his leg, leaving rookie running back Kaelon Black to temporarily step into the lead role.
Speaking to reporters in the locker room after the final whistle, McCaffrey voiced frustration over the unexpected timing of the issue. "Man, I have no idea," McCaffrey stated regarding what happened to his leg. "It sucks because I feel like I was going on a run there, and my leg just died on me. [I] was trying to get it going the rest of the game, but it just sucks trying to play like that."
Despite the setback and a noticeable dip in his performance after returning for the second half—where he added only 10 rushing yards on three carries and 16 yards on three receptions—McCaffrey reassured reporters that he expects to make a full recovery. "But I know I'll be all right. Just really frustrating," he added, noting that he does not believe the injury will sideline him long-term.
San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan addressed the media following the game, indicating he would need to review game tape before evaluating McCaffrey's post-injury effectiveness. Shanahan also provided an update on cornerback Upton Stout, who was active despite a shoulder injury but served only as an emergency option and did not see the field.
The 49ers will now benefit from a timely Week 8 bye, giving McCaffrey crucial rest to heal his thigh before the team returns to action in a Week 9 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders.
