Afghanistan and Zimbabwe to Clash in UAE ODI Tri-Series Final
Afghanistan and Zimbabwe advanced to the final of the triangular cricket tournament in the United Arab Emirates after eliminating Bangladesh.
Afghanistan and Zimbabwe are set to contest the final of the One Day International triangular series in the United Arab Emirates following the elimination of Bangladesh. The title match is scheduled to take place at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.
The Afghan side secured their spot in the final after delivering a dominant performance throughout the tournament. In their previous encounter against Zimbabwe, Afghanistan claimed a 158-run victory, powered by a century from Sediqullah Atal and a four-wicket haul by Rashid Khan. Afghanistan also secured a subsequent win over Bangladesh, which sealed Bangladesh's exit from the competition.
Bangladesh's elimination came after disappointing results in the tri-series, including a 99-run defeat to Zimbabwe followed by a seven-wicket loss to Afghanistan. Failing to chase a target and getting bowled out for 160 against Afghanistan capped off a difficult campaign that left the team reflecting on missed opportunities and internal struggles with pressure.
Speaking on the team's difficulties, a team management official remarked that the squad displayed a noticeable reluctance to take risks, stating that it was painful to watch their approach against Afghanistan. Stand-in captain Tawhid Hridoy acknowledged the gap between the team's ambitions and their actual execution on the field during major tournaments.
Ahead of the final showdown, analysts note that the Sharjah pitch traditionally features slow surfaces that tend to assist spin bowlers as the match progresses. Conditions in the UAE have historically favored teams that bat first, as the wicket slows down significantly under lights during the second innings.
In their historical head-to-head record in One Day Internationals, Afghanistan holds the upper hand with 21 victories compared to Zimbabwe's 10, alongside one match ending with no result out of 31 total encounters. Both teams enter the final with fully fit squads available for selection.
Cricket experts view Afghanistan as the favorites heading into the final match due to the strong form of their spin attack and key batters. Meanwhile, Zimbabwe will look to counter the Afghan spinners and rely on standout performers like Brendan Taylor and Brad Evans to claim the tournament trophy.
