India Defeats Zimbabwe by 121 Runs to Secure ODI Series
Brilliant centuries from Harmanpreet Kaur and Deepti Sharma power India to an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
India secured a dominant 121-run victory over Zimbabwe in the second women’s one-day international on Sunday, taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. Playing under newly appointed captain Smriti Mandhana, the hosts bounced back from an early collapse to post an imposing total of 328 runs for six wickets at the venue.
The home side experienced a difficult start after choosing to bat first, losing both openers cheaply. Captain Mandhana fell for a duck in the opening over after mistiming a pull shot, and Shafali Verma followed shortly after when she was caught at mid-wicket off Nomvelo Sibanda's bowling, leaving India struggling at 19 runs for two wickets.
Facing a challenging situation, former captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Pratika Rawal initiated a crucial recovery. Rawal contributed 61 runs off 67 deliveries, forming a 124-run partnership with Harmanpreet that stabilized the innings and shifted momentum back to the home team.
Harmanpreet orchestrated the innings with a masterclass in batting, scoring 126 runs off 121 balls. Benefiting from three dropped catches by the visitors, she delivered her eighth ODI century, highlighting her exceptional form as a specialist batter after stepping down from the captaincy.
Deepti Sharma joined Harmanpreet to add 153 runs in a commanding partnership, later reaching her second ODI century. Remaining unbeaten on 106 runs off 86 balls, Deepti struck 15 boundaries and reached her milestone with a boundary in the final over, helping propel India to their challenging total.
In response, Zimbabwe struggled to build meaningful partnerships against the Indian spin attack. Although Modester Mupachikwa top-scored with 49 runs and Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano added 46, the visitors were unable to maintain the required run rate against disciplined bowling.
Young left-arm orthodox spinner Vaishnavi Sharma dismantled the touring side's batting lineup during an impressive spell. Playing in only her second ODI, Vaishnavi claimed four wickets for 39 runs, while Deepti capped off her all-round performance by capturing three wickets.
Zimbabwe was eventually bowled out for 207 runs in 48.5 overs, sealing another convincing win for India following their nine-wicket victory in the opening match of the historic bilateral series.
