Washington Wizards rookie AJ Dybantsa is set to miss the team's season opener against the Milwaukee Bucks due to an ankle injury. Wizards head coach Brian Keefe announced the news, noting that the 2026 No. 1 overall draft pick is currently listed as day-to-day with a mild ankle sprain.

The injury occurred during the team's preseason finale last Friday. While attempting a midrange jump shot, Dybantsa landed awkwardly on his left ankle and was forced to head to the locker room. Prior to the setback, the BYU product put together a solid preseason campaign, averaging 12.8 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.5 steals across four games.

Despite the disappointing timing, Coach Keefe expressed optimism that the young forward will not miss an extended period of time. Sources differ slightly on the exact moment and opponent of the injury, with reports indicating it happened either against the Detroit Pistons or the New Orleans Pelicans, but all confirm the resulting ankle issue keeps him sidelined for the opening matchup.

The Wizards enter the new season with a heavily revamped and deep roster that features notable stars such as Anthony Davis, Trae Young, and Deandre Ayton. With Dybantsa unavailable for Wednesday night's contest at Capital One Arena, the team is expected to adjust its lineup accordingly.

In Dybantsa's absence, Bilal Coulibaly is widely projected to step into the starting lineup. Analysts note that Coulibaly's defensive awareness will complement Trae Young's passing abilities well, while players like Khris Middleton could also see an uptick in playing time during the rookie's recovery.

The Milwaukee Bucks arrive in Washington following a significant offseason overhaul, which included trading Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Miami Heat and acquiring guard Tyler Herro. The matchup presents an early test for both franchises as they look to start their campaigns on a strong note.

Following Wednesday's opener, the Wizards' schedule continues quickly with a home game against the Toronto Raptors and a trip to Chicago to face the Bulls. While Dybantsa is eager to make his official NBA debut, the franchise is expected to exercise caution before clearing him for a return to the court.
