Anthony Davis Leads Washington Wizards to Season-Opening Win Over Milwaukee Bucks
The star forward scored 34 points in his long-awaited home debut to secure a 128-116 victory for Washington.
Anthony Davis delivered an electric performance in his long-awaited debut for the Washington Wizards, leading his team to a 128-116 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday at Capital One Arena. Davis scored 34 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, and earned MVP chants throughout the game from an energized home crowd.
Speaking to reporters after the game, Davis expressed his appreciation for the fans and the strong atmosphere in the arena. "I had so much fun tonight. A lot of emotion. A lot of energy," Davis said. "I was just feeding off the crowd, off my teammates."
The official attendance for the season opener reached 18,805 fans, falling roughly 1,500 short of the arena's total capacity. However, the turnout marked a noticeable improvement from previous seasons. Washington struggled with low attendance during recent years, averaging just 16,106 fans per game in the 2025-26 season, which ranked as the second-lowest in the league amid consecutive seasons at the bottom of the standings.
Reflecting on his arrival in Washington following a trade in February and a subsequent hand injury that kept him sidelined, Davis humorously recalled his early days with the franchise. "If we're being honest, I'd like it to be a little more packed in there, you know? But the crowd was great. They were into it. They got us over the hump," Davis said. "Even when I came last year, the very first home game, I was like, 'It's Dress Like a Seat Night' in here."
Despite the lighthearted critique of past attendance figures, Davis emphasized that the team's improved performance is helping draw supporters back. The opening night win brought the Wizards to a 1-0 record, improbably marking the franchise's first winning record since late November 2022.
Washington's roster features several key acquisitions and young talents alongside Davis, including guard Trae Young, who contributed 20 points and 13 assists in the opener, along with veterans Khris Middleton and Deandre Ayton. Top overall draft pick AJ Dybantsa remains out of the lineup due to an ankle injury.
Looking ahead to the remainder of the schedule, Davis urged caution and focus after just one contest. "It's only one," Davis said. "Eighty-one left."
