Al-Hilal Rotates Squad Against Al-Shamal in AFC Champions League
Captain Salem Al-Dawsari earns his first start of the season as Simone Inzaghi rests key players in Qatar.
Saudi Arabian powerhouse Al-Hilal traveled to Qatar on Tuesday to take on Al-Shamal at Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor, competing in the third round of the AFC Champions League Elite league phase. The encounter marks a critical test for both clubs in the continental tournament, with the visiting side relying on a heavily reshuffled roster as manager Simone Inzaghi navigates a demanding domestic and international schedule.
The most significant development in Inzaghi's selection is the return of club captain Salem Al-Dawsari to the starting eleven. Known widely as "The Tornado," the experienced winger had been limited to just two appearances off the bench across the current campaign following surgery he underwent after playing for Saudi Arabia at the 2026 World Cup. Tuesday's match offers the talismanic attacker his first opportunity of the season to lead the squad onto the field from the opening kickoff.
Al-Dawsari headlines a lineup packed largely with reserve options, as Inzaghi decided to give valuable minutes to depth players while resting several established starters. Supporting Al-Dawsari in the front line are Ivorian forward Mohamed Kader Meite and Sabri Dahl. In the center of the pitch, experienced regular Mohamed Kanno anchors the midfield group alongside Murad Hawsawi and Frenchman Simon Bouabre.
The defensive setup features Mohammed Al-Owais starting between the posts for Al-Hilal. The back line operating in front of him consists of right-back Mutaib Al-Harbi, left-back Theo Hernandez, and a central defensive pairing of Ali Lajami and Turkish defender Yusuf Akcicek. This restructured group was tasked with maintaining defensive solidity while managing the absence of several key figures who regularly anchor the team.
Squad rotation played a major role in shaping Inzaghi's tactical choices ahead of the trip to Qatar. Reports from the Saudi newspaper Arriyadiyah indicated that the Italian manager leaned toward giving rest to Portuguese midfielder Ruben Neves and Saudi full-back Mohammed Mahzari. The decision comes ahead of another challenging domestic test, with Al-Hilal scheduled to host Al-Fateh at Kingdom Arena Stadium on Saturday in the twelfth round of the Roshn League.
Beyond strategic rest, Al-Hilal has also been forced to cope with a string of injuries and disciplinary setbacks. Midfield presence Sergej Milinkovic-Savic faced fitness doubts that threatened to sideline him alongside Neves, potentially raising the club's absentee list to five players. Brazilian winger Gabriel Martinelli was ruled out after suffering an injury during Friday's 3-2 victory against Al-Qadsiah in the eleventh round of league action.
Compounding the squad's challenges, Dutch winger Crysencio Summerville remains unavailable due to disciplinary sanctions. Summerville is currently serving a three-match suspension handed down by the Asian Football Confederation, stemming from a red card he received during Al-Hilal's tournament opener against Qatari side Al-Gharafa in the initial round of the league phase.
Despite the thinned ranks, Al-Hilal entered Tuesday's contest in a strong position within the West group standings, holding fourth place with a perfect record of six points collected from two consecutive victories. In contrast, host club Al-Shamal entered the matchday positioned in eleventh place, having earned two points following back-to-back draws in their first two tournament fixtures.
