A lucky lottery player in Alberta woke up significantly wealthier after winning a record-breaking $90 million Lotto Max jackpot. According to the Western Canada Lottery Corp., the massive prize was awarded following a Tuesday draw after a ticket holder outside of Calgary and Edmonton successfully matched all seven winning numbers.

The winning combination for the draw consisted of the numbers 8, 15, 19, 23, 26, 28, 34, along with the bonus number 38. In addition to the sole jackpot winner, another resident from Alberta secured a second-place prize worth just over $200,000 by matching six numbers and the bonus. That secondary prize was shared with players from British Columbia and Ontario.

The historic $90 million top prize marked a milestone for the Canada-wide lottery. Following a rule change implemented in April, the maximum jackpot limit was increased from its previous cap of $80 million, allowing the prize pool to reach unprecedented heights as consecutive weekly draws went without a winner.

Alongside the primary jackpot, the Tuesday draw featured additional winning opportunities, including Maxplus and Maxmillions prizes. Another player located outside of Alberta's major urban centers won a $100,000 Maxplus prize, while a Calgary resident took home more than $33,000. Overall, more than two million people claimed a free play from the draw.

Tony Bitonti, Director of Media Relations at the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, previously explained that the game structure expanded alongside the jackpot cap. For every $10 million the jackpot increases, additional $100,000 Maxplus prizes are added to the pool, creating multiple tiers of significant prizes for participants across the country.

Despite the excitement surrounding the record-breaking payout, lottery officials consistently remind players about the steep odds of securing the grand prize. The mathematical probability of a single person winning the $90 million Lotto Max jackpot is approximately 1 in 33.4 million.

Because the odds of claiming a major prize are exceptionally slim, lottery representatives frequently urge participants to check their tickets promptly using retail scanners or smartphone applications rather than letting them sit forgotten in jacket pockets or glove compartments. Unclaimed prizes remain a recurring issue, with millions of dollars occasionally expiring before winners come forward.
