Filipino tennis sensation Alexandra Eala opened her campaign at the Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open on Tuesday with a hard-fought victory against 18-year-old Emerson Jones. Eala claimed the match in straight sets, winning 6-4, 6-3 to book her place in the second round of the tournament.

Speaking to the passionate crowd after her opening match, Eala expressed her enthusiasm for returning to the city for the second consecutive year. She noted that concluding her season in Hong Kong provided a wonderful atmosphere close to home.

Eala originally anticipated facing American player Alycia Parks in the opening round. However, the world No. 59 from Florida withdrew approximately an hour before the evening match. This sudden change allowed Jones, who had previously lost in the qualifying draw, to enter the main bracket as a lucky loser.

Reflecting on her opponent after the match, Eala praised the young competitor's character and athletic abilities. "Emerson is such a sweetheart off the court and such a great player on it. I am looking forward to many more matches together," Eala said.

Despite securing the victory, Eala acknowledged that she was not operating at her absolute best during the encounter. Statistics from the match highlighted areas for improvement, notably that the Filipino player was broken four times by an opponent ranked significantly lower in the standings.

Looking ahead in the tournament schedule, Eala is set to face Czechia's Tereza Valentova, the world No. 85, in the second round on Thursday. A successful run past Valentova could set up potential matches against higher-ranked competitors later in the week as Eala pursues her second WTA title of the year.
