Apple has officially announced its eighth-generation iPad mini, marking the most significant update to its smallest tablet line to date. Unveiled in Cupertino, California, the updated device introduces a stunning OLED display, a major performance leap with the A20 Pro processor, and an IP67 water and dust resistance rating, making it the first iPad to feature water protection.

Measuring 5.4 millimeters in thickness, the new model is 14 percent thinner and 13 percent lighter than its predecessor. By shrinking the bezels by 24 percent, Apple managed to expand the Super Retina XDR screen size from 8.3 inches to 8.5 inches while maintaining the same physical footprint. The OLED panel delivers a peak brightness of up to 1,200 nits—more than double the previous generation—alongside deeper blacks, a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, and a nano-texture glass option to reduce glare.

Performance is driven by the A20 Pro chip, manufactured using a 2-nanometer process. According to Apple, the processor delivers up to 4.5 times faster artificial intelligence performance and up to 2.7 times faster graphics performance compared to the previous model. The tablet also introduces an innovative Acoustic Display technology, utilizing woofers that play through the screen and custom tweeters hidden within the aluminum enclosure to enhance audio quality while preserving the sealed IP67 design.

Connectivity receives a substantial boost with the inclusion of Apple's N1 wireless chip, supporting Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread. Cellular configurations utilize the new C2 modem, which offers data speeds up to 50 percent faster than the prior generation. Running on iPadOS 27, the tablet integrates Siri AI, which draws on personal context and onscreen awareness to assist users, though availability may vary by region.

Hardware specifications and pricing vary depending on the chosen storage capacity. The base Wi-Fi model starts at $699 with 128GB of storage, while cellular versions begin at $849. Higher configurations include 256GB and 512GB options, with the top-tier 512GB model featuring a fully enabled A20 Pro processor with a 6-core CPU, 7-core GPU, and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine.

Dave Pakula, Apple's vice president of Hardware Engineering, emphasized the versatility of the device, stating that the combination of a thinner design, OLED display, and powerful internal hardware represents a major leap forward for users. The tablet is available in two neutral finishes, midnight and starlight, and abandons previous bright color options.

Customers can pre-order the new iPad mini starting Wednesday, October 28, in 36 countries and regions, with official retail availability and shipping beginning on Friday, November 6.
