Aston Villa Defeats Viking 3-1 to Maintain Perfect Champions League Start
Unai Emery's squad secured their third consecutive victory in the tournament behind goals from Ross Barkley and Emiliano Buendia.
Aston Villa continued their impressive run in the Champions League by defeating Viking 3-1 at Villa Park, extending their perfect record to three wins from three matches in the European campaign. The victory extends Villa's formidable home form, marking their 12th consecutive major European home win, which ties the record for an English club this century alongside Manchester City and Manchester United.
The hosts dominated the opening half, registering 14 shots before halftime. Ross Barkley opened the scoring in the 23rd minute by rising highest to head in a set-piece from Ibrahim Mbaye. Shortly after, Emiliano Buendia doubled the lead from the penalty spot in the 37th minute following a VAR review after Alysson was brought down inside the box.
Villa extended their advantage in the 62nd minute when Viking defender Henrik Heggheim inadvertently turned a deflected cross from Alysson into his own net. Despite controlling the majority of the match and outshooting their opponents 21 to 10, Villa missed out on a third straight clean sheet when Peter Christiansen scored a late consolation goal for the visitors in the closing stages.
Viking manager Bjarte Lunde Aarsheim admitted his team showed too much respect to their Premier League opponents during a difficult first half. However, Aarsheim was pleased with the improved performance after the break, noting that drawing the second half 1-1 gave his side something positive to build on following their previous draw against Bayern Munich.
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery expressed satisfaction with his players' growing confidence and tactical understanding. Emery stated that his squad is meeting the high demands of competing in Europe while maintaining focus on their upcoming domestic fixtures.
The victory leaves Villa second in the Champions League standings, trailing the top spot only on goal difference. Emiliano Buendia also carved his name into the club's history books by becoming the first Villa player to score in four consecutive appearances in major European competition, while Barkley maintained his recent scoring form.
Looking ahead, Villa will shift their attention back to domestic play before returning to European competition next month to face LaLiga leaders Barcelona, as they look to build further momentum in both tournaments.
