Aston Villa Defeats Viking FK 3-1 to Climb Champions League Standings
Unai Emery's squad secured a comfortable victory at Villa Park to maintain their flawless start in the European campaign.
Aston Villa extended their 100% start to the UEFA Champions League campaign with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Norwegian side Viking at Villa Park. Managed by Unai Emery, the Premier League side has rebounded strongly from a difficult start to the season, securing their fifth win in six matches across all competitions and climbing to second place in the Champions League standings after three matches.
The visitors from the Eliteserien arrived in England following a miraculous 3-3 draw against German champions Bayern Munich the previous week. However, they were unable to recreate that magic as Villa continued their strong run of form, which included a 6-0 thrashing of Fenerbahce a week prior.
Midfielder Ross Barkley opened the scoring for Villa, nodding home a perfectly-weighted corner from Ibrahim Mbaye to net his third goal of this season's competition. Viking goalkeeper Arild Ostbo had been busy early on, denying a pair of headers from Nicolas Jackson within the opening ten minutes, but could do nothing to stop Barkley's header.
Villa doubled their advantage before halftime through a penalty kick. Referee Sebastian Gishamer initially failed to spot a foul by Zlatko Tripic on Alysson inside the box, but stopped play following a VAR review, allowing Emi Buendia to coolly slot home from the spot.
Despite sustained pressure from the home side, Viking showed resilience in the second half. Following numerous missed opportunities by Villa, including a goalbound back-heel by Buendia and a missed one-on-one by Alysson, the English club finally put the result out of reach just after the hour mark. Alysson drove a cross into the box that deflected off Henrik Heggheim and into the net for an own goal.
Viking refused to back down and was rewarded for an improved second-half performance six minutes from time. Peter Christiansen ferociously volleyed in a cross from Kristoffer Askildsen, spoiling Villa's bid for a third consecutive clean sheet.
The victory leaves Aston Villa in a strong position in the continental tournament as they prepare for upcoming fixtures, while Viking will look to regroup following a tough challenge at Villa Park.
