Atlanta Falcons Social Media Post Draws Comparisons to Nazi Imagery
The team faced significant online backlash after updating their profile picture to feature a vintage-inspired design.
The Atlanta Falcons faced a wave of criticism on social media this week after updating their profile pictures on X and Instagram with a graphic that many users suggested resembled Nazi-era German imagery. The design featured the team's black falcon emblem set against a background of red, white, black, and gold vertical stripes.
The team posted the update on Wednesday with the caption "New PFP," an abbreviation for "new profile picture." While the Falcons did not provide an official explanation for the design in the post, reports indicate the imagery was intended to celebrate the team's 1966 expansion era. The Falcons are scheduled to wear throwback uniforms during their upcoming game against the San Francisco 49ers at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Social media users quickly reacted to the post, with thousands of replies drawing comparisons between the color scheme and the Reichskriegsflagge, a flag used in Germany during the 1930s and 1940s. Many of the responses included memes and jokes referencing World War II, with some users suggesting the design was unintentionally evocative of Nazi symbols.
This is not the first time the franchise has encountered such comparisons. In 2024, the team experienced a similar reaction after posting a photo of a 1960s-era helmet logo on X, which also led to a flurry of negative commentary regarding its perceived historical resemblance.
Sports logo historian Chris Creamer noted that the backlash likely stemmed from a lack of foresight rather than intentional messaging. "Absolutely there was no ill intent, and I can’t imagine in a million years the Atlanta Falcons would do something like" seeking Nazi alignment, Creamer told NBC News. He explained that it is common practice for social media teams to update profile aesthetics to match throwback uniforms during special events.
Creamer suggested that while the initial post may have been an honest oversight, the team's decision to keep the image up as the controversy grew became a point of contention. "I think if I was in the room with the Falcons, honestly, I wouldn’t have noticed it when I hit send," he said. "But I would have, once the replies started coming in as fast as they were coming in and it spiraled out of control. At that point, they could have taken it down and tried a different one."
When reached for comment, a representative for the Atlanta Falcons clarified that the team has not introduced a new logo and declined to provide further statements regarding the social media activity.
