Former NFL Defensive End Allen Bailey Dies at Age 37
The former Kansas City Chiefs and Atlanta Falcons lineman was found dead in his Florida home.
Allen Bailey, a former defensive end who spent a decade in the National Football League playing for the Kansas City Chiefs and the Atlanta Falcons, has died at the age of 37. His body was discovered on Tuesday by his wife, Lauren Bailey, inside their home in Florida, according to his brother, Alford Bailey Jr.
While an official cause of death has not yet been released, family members stated that they believe he passed away from natural causes. The unexpected loss has prompted an outpouring of grief and tributes from family, former teammates, and coaches across the football community.
Born in March 1989, Bailey grew up in Hog Hammock, a historic Gullah Geechee community on Sapelo Island in Coastal Georgia. His upbringing featured a unique daily commute by ferry to attend school on the mainland in McIntosh County. He developed into a standout player at McIntosh County Academy before continuing his football career at the University of Miami, where he earned All-ACC honors during his final two college seasons.
The Kansas City Chiefs selected Bailey in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft with the 86th overall pick. He spent the first eight seasons of his professional career in Kansas City, becoming a reliable contributor on the defensive line and earning the nickname "The Incredible Hulk" from teammates and coaches for his strength and physical build.
During his final season with the Chiefs in 2018, Bailey recorded a career-high six sacks and recovered four fumbles, helping the team reach the AFC Championship Game. He subsequently signed with the Atlanta Falcons in 2019, playing 31 games over two seasons before being released by the franchise in February 2021. Over his 10-season NFL career, Bailey appeared in 133 regular-season games and accumulated 22 sacks.
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid confirmed the tragic news during a press conference, remembering Bailey as one of his favorite players and a great teammate. "Sad news, the passing of Allen Bailey. Our hearts go out to his family. Prayers are with them," Reid said. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes also shared fond memories of playing alongside Bailey during the 2017 and 2018 seasons, describing him as a crucial glue guy who helped make everything function on the field.
Beyond his athletic achievements, Bailey remained deeply connected to his roots in coastal Georgia through the Allen Bailey Foundation, previously known as Allen Bailey Charities. The organization supported youth and families in McIntosh, Glynn, and Camden counties by providing free football camps, scholarships, backpack giveaways, and annual Thanksgiving turkey distributions.
