Broncos Wideout Jaylen Waddle Questionable for Chiefs Clash After Chest Injury
The veteran receiver sat out Wednesday's practice after aggravating a chest issue against Arizona.
Denver Broncos wide receiver Jaylen Waddle missed practice on Wednesday due to an aggravated chest injury sustained during Sunday's 30-16 victory over the Arizona Cardinals, clouding his status for the upcoming Week 8 AFC West showdown against the Kansas City Chiefs at Mile High.
The injury occurred with 4:51 remaining in the fourth quarter as Denver worked to protect a two-score lead. On a first-and-10 play, head coach Sean Payton called a reverse toss to Waddle, who bobbled and fumbled the ball before securing it on the ground. Arizona linebacker Josh Sweat subsequently landed on top of Waddle with the football pinned beneath him. Waddle left the field with trainers while moving his left arm and did not return to the game.
Payton openly criticized his own decision-making during his postgame press conference, noting that rookie running back Jonah Coleman had just gained 15 yards on the previous play and was effectively closing out the game on the ground. "It was awful," Payton said. "Alright, I'm sorry. And if you look it up, in 2008, in a similar situation, even a more radical reverse, fumbled, Tampa Bay beat us. I know better. And every once in a while, you fall in love with a play."
According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Waddle did not sustain structural damage to his shoulder or collarbone, but instead aggravated a chest issue he had managed over the preceding two weeks. Rapoport indicated that while Waddle is not expected to be placed on injured reserve, his game-day availability will depend entirely on his progression in practice leading up to Friday's final injury report.
Denver acquired the 27-year-old receiver during the offseason in a major trade with the Miami Dolphins, sending first- and third-round draft selections in exchange. Despite playing in a low-volume passing scheme, Waddle serves as the most targeted receiver for quarterback Bo Nix, recording 26 receptions on 45 targets for 276 yards and one touchdown, along with two rushing attempts for 23 yards through seven contests.
Waddle's potential absence comes at an inconvenient time for the 5-2 Broncos, who sit just a half-game behind the Chiefs for the division lead. Nix showed clear progress against Arizona following an earlier slump linked to a fractured ankle, connecting on four explosive pass plays, including a 27-yard seam pass to Waddle. Even at less than full health, Waddle's speed remains an essential element that forces opposing defenses to account for deep perimeter coverage.
Denver's injury concerns extend beyond the wide receiver corps ahead of Sunday's matchup with Kansas City's high-powered offense. Defensive lineman Zach Allen missed Wednesday's session with a hamstring injury, while safety Talanoa Hufanga sat out with an ankle problem. Left tackle Garett Bolles and receiver Marvin Mims were also limited in practice due to hip and ankle ailments, leaving Denver's coaching staff to balance crucial roster decisions before the divisional contest.
