Andy Reid Takes Full Blame After Chiefs Suffer First Loss to Seahawks
Kansas City head coach Andy Reid shouldered the responsibility for a dismal offensive and defensive performance while addressing kicker Harrison Butker's ongoing struggles.
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid took full responsibility for his team's performance following a decisive 20-3 defeat against the Seattle Seahawks in a prime-time matchup. The loss marked the first setback of the season for the Chiefs, who struggled across all phases of the game against the reigning Super Bowl champions.
Speaking to reporters after the contest, Reid admitted that he failed to adequately prepare his squad for the challenge. The Chiefs' high-powered offense was completely stymied, totaling just 213 yards and failing to score a single touchdown. According to ESPN insights, it was the first time in quarterback Patrick Mahomes' career that the team was held without a single drive reaching the red zone.
The difficulties were not limited to the offense, as the Chiefs' defense spent the majority of the game on the field. Midway through the third quarter, the Seahawks had doubled Kansas City's possession time and run more than twice as many plays. Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo's unit allowed Seattle to convert 11 of 16 third-down attempts.
Amid the team-wide struggles, veteran kicker Harrison Butker endured another difficult outing, converting only one of three field-goal attempts. Butker missed a 58-yard attempt just before halftime that fell short of the crossbar and later hooked a 45-yard try wide right in the fourth quarter when the Chiefs were trailing by ten points.
Reid addressed Butker's performance during his postgame press conference, acknowledging that the veteran specialist has not been performing at his usual standard. "Listen, he's been one of the most consistent kickers in football," Reid said. "He's off a bit. So, we've got to fix that."
Butker himself admitted that his preparation did not feel right prior to kickoff. "Warm-up wasn't great. It's just something that you have to roll with and try to fix it in the game and do the best that you can," Butker stated, noting that he continues to receive full support from special teams coordinator Dave Toub.
Statistical analysis highlights a broader slump for the kicker, as he has missed 15 kicks since the start of the 2025 campaign, leading the NFL in that category. Despite his recent struggles and a lucrative contract extension signed in the offseason, Reid maintains confidence in his longtime placekicker as the team looks to bounce back.
Reid emphasized that the entire organization must elevate its level of play moving forward. "Listen, all three phases we struggled, so we've got to do better, and that's my responsibility," Reid said. "So I take full responsibility for this. We've got to play better as a team."
