Andy Reid Addresses Harrison Butker's Struggles After Chiefs Loss to Seahawks
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid acknowledged that veteran kicker Harrison Butker is off his usual form following a pair of missed field goals in a 20-3 defeat against the Seattle Seahawks.
The Kansas City Chiefs suffered their first loss of the season on Sunday night, falling 20-3 to the Seattle Seahawks during a primetime matchup at Lumen Field. While the entire offense struggled to find momentum against Seattle's dominant defense, veteran placekicker Harrison Butker came under intense scrutiny after missing two of his three field-goal attempts.
Butker's evening began to unravel just before halftime when he attempted a 58-yard field goal. The kick lacked the necessary distance, falling short of the crossbar and leaving Kansas City trailing at the break. Later in the game, with the Chiefs attempting to climb back into the contest during the fourth quarter, Butker pushed a 45-yard attempt wide right.
Despite his struggles, Butker did manage to convert a kick from beyond 50 yards earlier in the contest to put the Chiefs on the scoreboard. However, his overall performance contributed to mounting external pressure from frustrated fans taking to social media to question his ongoing spot on the roster.
Speaking to reporters during his postgame press conference, head coach Andy Reid offered a candid assessment of the veteran specialist's recent slump. "He's been one of the most consistent kickers in football, but he's off a bit — gotta fix it," Reid stated, maintaining that the organization still holds trust in his ability to work through the mechanical issues.
Butker himself admitted that things did not feel right during pregame warm-ups. "Warm-up wasn't great. It's just something that you have to roll with and try to fix it in the game and do the best that you can," Butker remarked. When asked about his ongoing misses, he added, "Life of a kicker, it either goes in or it doesn't. Unfortunately, there's been some kicks that haven't gone in."
The 31-year-old kicker has experienced a noticeable dip in production over recent seasons. Statistical records highlight that since the start of the 2025 campaign, Butker has accumulated 15 missed kicks, leading the NFL during that span. Furthermore, his conversion rate from 50 yards or deeper has dropped significantly since the 2024 season, raising questions regarding his long-range consistency.
Special teams coordinator Dave Toub has previously expressed support for the kicker, noting that he remains a human being susceptible to occasional mistakes. Yet, with Butker signed through 2028 under a lucrative contract that makes him one of the highest-paid specialists in the league, the margin for error remains razor-thin for an elite contender.
As the regular season continues, the Chiefs will look for their veteran kicker to regain his footing quickly. While the coaching staff remains patient, continued struggles on special teams could force the franchise to reevaluate its options moving forward.
