Seahawks Mock Taylor Swift After Defeating Chiefs, Sparking Fan Outrage
The Seattle Seahawks faced swift backlash from fans after using Taylor Swift's imagery and song to celebrate their victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Seattle Seahawks handed the Kansas City Chiefs their first loss of the season on Sunday night, winning 20-3 on Sunday Night Football. Following the dominant defensive performance that held the Chiefs to just 213 total yards, the Seahawks' official social media account posted a friendship bracelet reading "Seahawks Win" alongside the caption "End Game," a reference to a track from Taylor Swift's 2017 album reputation.
The post drew immediate criticism from passionate fans known as Swifties, who took to social media to voice their displeasure over the team targeting the pop star, who is married to Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. Fans argued that bringing a player's spouse into post-game trash talk crossed a line.
"Why do y'all think it's okay to troll a team by using the spouse of an opposing player? This wouldn't be acceptable if she wasn't Taylor Swift," one fan wrote on social media. Another user added, "Whether you think it's cute or not, why are we bringing players' significant others into this? Taylor did not play, she wasn't even there and you use her song as a caption."
Swift did not make the trip to Seattle to attend the primetime matchup. While she is a regular presence at Chiefs home games at Arrowhead Stadium, she has largely skipped road games during the NFL season. Her absence did not deter the defending Super Bowl champions from leaning into the pop culture reference, which drew inspiration from the friendship bracelets traded by fans during Swift's Eras Tour and Kelce's initial attempt to give Swift a bracelet with his number in 2023.
Despite the loss, the game marked a historic milestone for Kelce. The tight end caught three receptions for 44 yards, officially surpassing Pro Football Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez for the most receiving yards by a tight end in NFL history, including the postseason, reaching a total of 15,420 yards. The milestone catch also marked his 1,103rd career reception, the fifth-most on the NFL's all-time list.
As the Chiefs prepare to return to Kansas City, Swift faces a major upcoming appearance. The 36-year-old singer is slated to be inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame as its youngest-ever inductee, entering in the 20-Year Contemporary Songwriter/Artist category during a gala event at the Music City Center.
