Ballon d'Or 2026 Ceremony Approaches Amid Schedule Conflicts and Predictions

The prestigious soccer award ceremony in London coincides with a rescheduled Ligue 1 match, while experts and media outlets debate potential winners.

The 2026 Ballon d'Or ceremony is scheduled to take place on Monday in London at the London Palladium, bringing together the world's top soccer stars to discover who will be crowned the best player of the previous season. Ahead of the official gala, various publications and football legends have shared their projected rankings and alternative selections.

Among the prominent voices offering predictions is former Algerian international Rabah Madjer, who placed Kylian Mbappé at the top of his personal ballot. Madjer pointed to the French forward's stellar statistics, including leading the UEFA Champions League with 15 goals and capturing the Golden Boot at the FIFA World Cup with ten goals—making him the tournament's all-time leading scorer with 22 goals and the first player to finish as top scorer in consecutive editions. Despite missing a major collective trophy with Real Madrid or France, Madjer argued that Mbappé's individual excellence outweighed team achievements.

Madjer's selection places Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane in second position, highlighting his remarkable output of 73 goals across club and international competition, alongside Ousmane Dembélé in third. Young Spanish sensation Lamine Yamal occupies the fourth spot in Madjer's list after helping Spain win the World Cup and securing the Spanish league title with FC Barcelona, while Real Madrid winger Vinícius Júnior rounds out the top five.

Other media projections show varying perspectives. In an alternative ranking published by Marca, which consulted a jury of more than 200 former players, journalists, and analysts, Harry Kane took the top spot ahead of Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappé. That list also recognized Belgian talents, placing Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois at 28th and Mika Godts of Ajax at 86th.

Meanwhile, the buildup to the ceremony has been affected by domestic scheduling changes in France. The Professional Football League announced that the Ligue 1 fixture between Paris Saint-Germain and Lyon, initially set for Sunday evening, has been postponed to Monday night at the request of the Paris police prefecture. The decision stems from security demands and widespread demonstrations planned across the country over the weekend.

Because the rescheduled match kicks off on Monday evening, it directly conflicts with the Ballon d'Or broadcast. The overlap presents a significant challenge for Paris Saint-Germain, which features roughly ten players nominated for the accolade, including Ousmane Dembélé, Fabián Ruiz, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. Consequently, several nominated players will be required on the pitch at the Parc des Princes rather than attending the gala in London.

This scheduling clash echoes a similar event from the previous season, when an OM-PSG match postponed due to severe weather coincided with the 2025 Ballon d'Or ceremony in Paris. As players prepare for both the gala and domestic competition, the soccer world awaits the official announcement of the 2026 winner.
