Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe found himself at the center of intense public scrutiny following a diplomatic controversy in China and heated debates surrounding the 2026 Ballon d'Or award. The French international recently released an official apology statement in French, English, and Mandarin after a viral video emerged showing him referring to Mao Zedong as a dictator.

The remarks sparked immediate and severe reactions in China. Several major Chinese commercial partners, including Dongpeng, Mengniu, and Milkground, swiftly terminated their sponsorship contracts with the forward. Furthermore, Chinese state television broadcaster CCTV threatened to suspend the broadcast of Spanish league matches and games featuring the French player.

Addressing the controversy directly to calm the rising tensions, Mbappe expressed deep remorse for his statements. "I apologize to everyone whom my words have hurt. That was absolutely not my intention. I have a profound respect for the Chinese people and their history, and I am sincerely sorry," he stated.

Before the player's official response, LaLiga President Javier Tebas had already issued a formal apology on social media on behalf of Spanish football, describing the event as an isolated incident in an effort to protect economic and institutional relations with China. Meanwhile, the player returned his focus to the pitch, coming off a remarkable performance where he scored twice in a 2-1 victory against FC Barcelona at Camp Nou.

At the same time, Mbappe's candidacy for the 2026 Ballon d'Or sparked vigorous debates among sports commentators. During a broadcast on Canal+, journalist Bertrand Latour strongly opposed the possibility of the Real Madrid forward winning the prestigious individual trophy, arguing that a potential victory would be "shameful" due to his lack of collective titles during the season.

Latour criticized the overwhelming praise directed at the player on the airwaves, stating bluntly that awarding him the honor without team trophies would be unacceptable. The comments generated a lively on-air discussion among the panel, highlighting the intense polarization surrounding the year's top individual football honor.

As the football world weighs individual statistics against team achievements, other contenders such as Lamine Yamal and Harry Kane have also emerged as prominent figures in the discussions for the 70th edition of the Ballon d'Or. As the ceremony approaches, Mbappe continues his club campaign, preparing for the upcoming league fixture against Racing de Santander at Estadio El Sardinero.
