Bayern Munich Delegation Travels to London for the Ballon d'Or Gala
A delegation from Bayern Munich, including striker Harry Kane, has traveled to London for the 70th Ballon d'Or ceremony.
A delegation from Bayern Munich traveled to London on Monday for the 70th Ballon d'Or gala, led by England captain and top striker Harry Kane, who is among the favorites for the prestigious award. Club officials, including chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen and president Herbert Hainer, accompanied the players on a private flight from Oberpfaffenhofen airport near Munich.
The German club made the journey with a large contingent, but the group was missing sporting director Max Eberl, who had to stay home due to a cold. Manager Vincent Kompany was also absent after collapsing at the club's training ground following a medical incident on Friday. Kompany is currently in stable condition and undergoing tests in the hospital, with Aaron Danks stepping in as manager in the interim.
Bayern's leadership has strongly backed Kane throughout the voting process. President Herbert Hainer stated, "Harry Kane embodies the idea that sporting greatness is incomplete without greatness of character. He would be a worthy World Footballer of the Year." Chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen and other high-ranking officials also publicly supported the striker, pointing to his exceptional scoring record.
In addition to Kane, several other Bayern players were nominated across categories. Michael Olise, Luis Díaz, and Dayot Upamecano traveled alongside women's team nominees Klara Bühl, Pernille Harder, and Momoko Tanikawa. Eighteen-year-old Lennart Karl also made the trip as a nominee for the youth talent awards.
For Bayern Munich, the pursuit of individual recognition carries deep historical significance. The club previously faced major controversies regarding the Ballon d'Or, notably when Franck Ribéry missed out on the award in 2013 following Bayern's treble, and when Robert Lewandowski finished second behind Lionel Messi in 2021 despite breaking long-standing scoring records. Those past disappointments fueled departures and criticisms regarding how players in the Bundesliga are viewed internationally.
Kane enters the ceremony having scored 73 goals in 65 competitive matches across club and international play last season, positioning him closely behind historical scoring milestones. A victory for the English striker would mark the first time an Englishman has won the award since Michael Owen in 2001 and would provide a major boost to the international reputation of the Bundesliga.
The 70th Ballon d'Or ceremony, organized jointly by UEFA and Groupe Amaury, takes place in London for the first time. Alongside Kane, other top contenders include Kylian Mbappé, Lamine Yamal, and Rodri. Kane acknowledged the significance of the event, stating that it could be a special evening.
