Italian tennis player Matteo Berrettini secured his place in the round of 16 at the 2026 Rolex Paris Masters following a hard-fought straight-sets victory over French home favorite Ugo Humbert. Berrettini triumphed 7-6(3), 7-5 after one hour and forty-six minutes of play at La Defense Arena.

Humbert, known for his prowess on indoor courts and having reached the Paris final in 2024, proved to be a challenging test, though he entered the match carrying the fatigue of a late-night finish in his previous round against Botic van de Zandschulp. Despite the local support, Berrettini maintained his composure, clinching the opening set in a tie-break before securing a crucial break late in the second set to seal the win.

The victory marks another solid step for Berrettini, who previously saved two match points against Brandon Nakashima in the opening round. The Italian's strong serving performance has been a cornerstone of his campaign this week as he navigates the demanding indoor hard-court conditions in the French capital.

Berrettini's progression comes during a turbulent week at the final Masters 1000 tournament of the season, which has seen the shocking early exits of numerous top seeds. On a chaotic Wednesday at the tournament, newly crowned world No. 1 Alexander Zverev fell in straight sets to Lorenzo Musetti, while seven-time champion Novak Djokovic suffered a stunning three-set defeat to qualifier Rinky Hijikata.

Additional high-profile casualties included fourth-seeded Daniil Medvedev, who was ousted by Peruvian qualifier Ignacio Buse, and eighth seed Alex de Minaur, who was defeated in straight sets by Argentina's Tomás Martín Etcheverry. Meanwhile, top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz managed to avoid the fate of his fellow leading contenders by overcoming American Alex Michelsen.

Looking ahead to the next round, Berrettini will face a formidable challenge against Carlos Alcaraz for a place in the tournament's quarter-finals. Alcaraz holds a 3-1 advantage in their previous head-to-head meetings, though the Italian will look to leverage his current momentum and potent serve to pull off an upset against the Spanish star.
