Cameron Johnson Sidelined with Ankle Sprain in Nuggets Opening Loss

Denver fell 96-84 to the Oklahoma City Thunder after struggling offensively and losing forward Cameron Johnson early in the game.

The Denver Nuggets suffered a 96-84 defeat against the Oklahoma City Thunder during their season opener, a loss complicated by an early injury to forward Cameron Johnson. Johnson started the game strong by scoring five points on two-of-three shooting in just 11 minutes of action before suffering an ankle sprain that forced him to the sidelines.

Head coach David Adelman noted that Johnson's premature exit disrupted the team's planned rotations, particularly during a high-stakes opening matchup when players are still adjusting to playing alongside one another. However, Adelman declined to use the injury as an excuse for the missed opportunity to spoil the Thunder's home opener.

The absence of Johnson added to Denver's depth concerns on a night when the team was already playing without Julian Strawther and Spencer Jones. The offensive struggles extended deeply into the starting lineup as well, with Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray combining for just 19 points on a dismal seven-of-30 shooting from the field.

Despite the offensive woes from his star players, Aaron Gordon carried the load for the starting unit by leading the Nuggets with 20 points, six rebounds, two steals, and a block while playing under a minutes restriction. Meanwhile, Christian Braun added seven points, but the cold shooting across the roster ultimately allowed Oklahoma City to pull away late.

Adelman emphasized that the rest of the roster needs to step up and display more aggression when opposing defenses heavily target Jokic and Murray. The coach stressed that players must capitalize on open looks rather than driving back into one of the league's toughest defensive units.

DeMar DeRozan contributed 13 points in his team debut off the bench, but the remaining reserves struggled to generate efficient offense. Rookie Trevon Brazile provided a bright spot by grabbing 12 rebounds and scoring four points in 18 minutes, prompting Adelman to encourage him and his teammates to maintain confidence in their shooting moving forward.
