Scottish Premiership leaders Celtic were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against Dundee United on Wednesday night at Celtic Park after mounting a second-half comeback. Defender Liam Scales provided the decisive touch to level the match, ensuring the Glasgow club salvaged a point after squandering an early lead and trailing at the interval. Despite dropping points at home, Celtic preserved a four-point cushion at the summit of the league standings thanks to rival results elsewhere.

Celtic initiated the match on the front foot and claimed the advantage in the 18th minute. Striker Kasper Hogh played a pass inside the penalty area to find Camilo Duran, who calmly slotted the ball home to give the hosts an early edge. The goal marked another productive moment for the Colombian attacker, though Dundee United manager Jim Goodwin subsequently lamented that his side had essentially gifted the opener to the reigning champions.

The visitors responded swiftly, taking full advantage of set-piece opportunities to dismantle Celtic's defensive organization. Zac Sapsford leveled the score by rising to meet a well-placed free kick delivered by midfielder Lyall Cameron, nodding his effort into the far corner of the net. Only three minutes later, another Cameron dead-ball delivery sparked chaos in the Celtic box, deflecting off Bert Esselink and into the path of Neil Farrugia, who forced home his first goal for the club via a deflection off Scales.

The contest also featured a moment of intense controversy during the opening half when young defender Colby Donovan lunged into a heavy tackle on Sapsford in midfield. While Dundee United players and supporters vehemently appealed for a red card, match referee Steven McLean opted to brandish only a yellow card. Former PGMOL chief and FIFA referee Keith Hackett later defended the official's judgment, arguing that while Donovan's leading leg was high, the player maintained contact with the ground, making the challenge reckless rather than dangerous enough to warrant an expulsion.

Trailing 2-1 at the break, Celtic manager Martin O'Neill faced mounting frustration from supporters who questioned his initial lineup configuration. O'Neill had deployed three nominal forwards, shifting the prolific Duran out wide while keeping Hogh in the central striking role. With Hogh struggling to register meaningful touches inside the box and extending a difficult goal-scoring stretch, O'Neill intervened decisively by making two substitutions at halftime, withdrawing both Hogh and Callum Osmand in favor of wingers Jota and Haissem Hassan.

The tactical adjustments immediately altered the tempo of the contest, tilting momentum firmly back toward the home side. Jota provided an instant creative spark on the flanks, producing several scoring chances and key deliveries. Celtic's persistence was rewarded when Jota curled an inswinging cross following a short corner sequence, allowing Scales to rise above the defense and direct a header inside the far post to restore parity.

Celtic continued to besiege the Dundee United goal in search of a late winner, generating 13 corner kicks and forcing visiting goalkeeper Jack Walton into five decisive saves, including a close-range stop against Mika Baur. However, Goodwin's disciplined defensive unit held firm through the final whistle to preserve the tie and stretch Dundee United's unbeaten streak to six matches, keeping them fifth in the table with 16 points.

Following the match, O'Neill acknowledged the defensive lapses of recent weeks but commended the determination his players displayed throughout the second half. Celtic now holds 28 points from 11 league matches, retaining their lead after nearest challengers Rangers were held to a draw against Hearts at Tynecastle. Celtic will turn their attention to a road clash against Falkirk on Sunday before hosting Turkish outfit Besiktas in the Europa League.
