A hard-fought draw at Estadio Azteca delays the league leaders' direct qualification for the postseason.

Club América missed an opportunity to lock up an early playoff berth on Wednesday night after battling to a 1-1 draw against Xolos de Tijuana in a rescheduled Matchday 7 fixture of the Liga MX Apertura 2026 tournament. The match, contested at the historic Estadio Azteca, had been postponed from early September due to América’s participation in the Leagues Cup, where the club finished in fourth place. Despite falling behind early, the league leaders rallied quickly to split the points.

Tijuana struck first in the opening quarter of an hour. In the 12th minute, a turnover during América’s buildup by defender Dagoberto Espinoza allowed Tijuana to launch a swift counterattack. Midfielder Jesús Gómez recovered possession and delivered a precise pass to Brazilian forward Elias Manoel, who calmly beat goalkeeper Rodolfo Cota to put the visitors ahead 1-0. The opportunistic strike rewarded an intense and organized start from the border club.

América responded almost immediately to erase the deficit. In the 18th minute, winger Isaías Violante controlled the ball and fed Colombian striker Miguel Borja inside the penalty area. Borja executed a low, angled strike past Tijuana goalkeeper Antonio Rodríguez to level the score at 1-1. The goal was Borja's sixth of the Apertura campaign, solidifying his role as the team's second-highest scorer behind Henry Martín, who has eight goals and did not participate in Wednesday's contest.

Both managers altered their tactical setups as the match progressed. In the second half, América coach Guillermo Almada brought on key attackers Brian Rodríguez and Carlos Álvarez to intensify the pressure. Meanwhile, Tijuana manager Sebastián Abreu introduced Ignacio Rivero and teenage midfielder Gilberto Mora, who received a warm ovation from the Azteca crowd following his strong performances for the Mexican national team in the recent World Cup. Tijuana’s task grew steeper late in the match when Gómez received a direct red card for a harsh challenge on Brian Rodríguez just outside the penalty box, reducing the visitors to ten men.

Despite being down a player, Tijuana managed to preserve the draw thanks to decisive defensive interventions in the closing stages. Antonio Rodríguez denied a point-blank attempt from Brian Rodríguez with a sharp reflex save, while Rivero executed a crucial clearance just before Borja could pounce on a rebound in front of an open goal. Abreu's squad maintained defensive discipline under sustained pressure until the final whistle, frustrating América's bid for all three points.

With the draw, América increased its total to 28 points at the summit of the Liga MX standings. While a victory would have mathematically confirmed the club's direct ticket to the postseason quarterfinals, the result still keeps them two points clear of joint-second-place rivals Cruz Azul and Chivas Guadalajara, who each hold 26 points. Tijuana advanced from eighth to seventh place with 21 points, strengthening its position inside the playoff zone as the regular season enters its final stretch.

The draw also highlighted América’s offensive firepower this season. Borja’s equalizer represented the club’s 34th goal of the Apertura, keeping the Águilas at the top of the league's scoring charts ahead of Cruz Azul, which has registered 32 goals, and Toluca, with 29. However, the inability to break down a ten-man opponent leaves Almada’s squad with narrow margins for error in their pursuit of securing the number one overall seed before the knockout phase begins.

With only three matches remaining in the regular phase, both squads face pivotal encounters in the upcoming Matchday 15 slate this weekend. América is set to host fifth-place Toluca on Saturday evening in Mexico City, while Tijuana travels north to face eighth-place Monterrey in a crucial clash for postseason positioning. Other key weekend fixtures include Guadalajara hosting Atlante on Saturday and Cruz Azul entertaining León on Sunday, ensuring that the race for the top spots remains tight.
