College Football Week 8 Upsets Shake Up Coaches and AP Top 25 Polls

A chaotic weekend of college football action resulted in widespread upsets across the country, as seven teams previously ranked in the top 25 lost their matchups ahead of Week 9. The heavy turbulence significantly altered both the Associated Press Top 25 and the Coaches Poll, reshaping the landscape for national championship contenders and conference title races alike.

The most severe damage occurred within the Big 12 conference, where both BYU and Texas Tech suffered their first defeats of the season. BYU dropped from the upper tier following a thrilling 39-31 double-overtime loss on the road against UCF in what became a historic program win for the Knights. Meanwhile, Texas Tech stumbled significantly in a 37-24 loss at Cincinnati, where the offense struggled heavily in the red zone and failed to score a touchdown until the final minute of the game.

These defeats cleared the path for Utah to capture sole possession of first place in the Big 12 standings. The Utes secured a hard-fought 21-13 victory against Houston, bolstered by a strong defensive performance in the first half and a standout rushing display from quarterback Devon Dampier, who accumulated 150 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

In the SEC, Texas managed to keep its fragile playoff hopes alive by securing a 34-27 win over then-No. 7 Ole Miss. Despite three turnovers by quarterback Arch Manning and a blown 21-point second-half lead, the Longhorns defense stepped up by intercepting Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss three times to stall a two-game losing skid.

Elsewhere, several other high-profile programs experienced major shifts in the polls following disappointing road performances. USC fell heavily in the rankings after managing just seven points and 241 total yards in a 24-7 defeat against unranked Wisconsin. Similarly, preseason Big Ten favorite Oregon saw its national championship aspirations take a severe hit following a 21-10 loss to Illinois in which the Ducks failed to score a single point in the second half.

At the top of the national rankings, Miami maintained its grip on the number one position in the polls following a dominant 52-23 victory over Pittsburgh. Wide receiver Malachi Toney set a program record by catching 16 passes for 194 yards and three touchdowns, keeping the Hurricanes undefeated at 7-0 heading into their upcoming matchup against North Carolina.
