Memphis Defeats East Carolina 41-34 in Overtime Thriller
The Tigers overcame a 16-3 halftime deficit on Thursday night to secure a dramatic conference victory.
The Memphis Tigers defeated the East Carolina Pirates 41-34 in an explosive overtime contest on Thursday night at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium. Trailing 16-3 at halftime, Memphis staged a remarkable comeback to improve their record to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in American Athletic Conference play.
The victory served as a crucial response for the Tigers following a difficult Week 7 loss to Tulane, a game marred by six turnovers. Head coach Charles Huff praised his team's resilience after a challenging week of preparation. "Really proud of the fight in the kids today," Huff said after the victory. "It was a rough week, but they bowed their neck, showed up to work every day, did what they were supposed to do, gave themselves a chance to play really well tonight."
East Carolina controlled much of the first half, capitalizing on early defensive stops and multiple field goals. Backup quarterback Mitch Griffis briefly entered the game after starter Emory Williams, and the Pirates defense forced a series of Memphis miscues, including a muffed punt, to build a 16-3 lead by intermission.
Memphis found its offensive rhythm in the second quarter and beyond, spearheaded by quarterback Marcus Stokes. After a player-only meeting earlier in the week to address offensive struggles, Stokes delivered a standout performance, throwing for 320 yards and three touchdowns while adding two more scores on the ground.
Stokes ignited the comeback in the third quarter with a 59-yard touchdown pass to Jermane Hayes. The Tigers steadily chipped away at the deficit, eventually tying the game at 27-27 on another touchdown pass from Stokes to Jemyri Davis following a muffed punt recovery.
Late in the fourth quarter, Memphis captured its first lead of the night at 34-27 following an 80-yard drive capped by an 80-yard march ending in a rushing touchdown by Stokes with 3:31 remaining. East Carolina responded efficiently with an eight-play, 75-yard drive, culminating in a 20-yard touchdown pass from Griffis to level the score at 34-34 with just 1:30 left in regulation, forcing overtime.
In the extra period, Memphis struck first when Stokes executed an aggressive dive into the end zone for a rushing touchdown. The Pirates managed one first down on their overtime possession before defensive back Ellis Ellis Jr. intercepted a goal-line fade pass to seal the victory for the Tigers.
With the win, Memphis moves forward to host the Army Black Knights in a conference matchup on the following Saturday. East Carolina falls to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in league play, suffering a tough road defeat as they prepare to return home for upcoming games against Temple and South Florida.
