Dinamo Zagreb experienced a difficult home defeat on Thursday in the Europa League, falling 4-2 to Dutch side NEC Nijmegen at Maksimir Stadium. Despite periods of control and a resilient effort in the first half, the Croatian club could not overcome defensive lapses and clinical finishing from the visitors.

The match started promisingly for the home side after NEC took an early lead in the 25th minute through 20-year-old Danish forward Clement Bischoff. Dinamo responded strongly, with Dion Drena Beljo netting two consecutive goals in the 33rd and 37th minutes to secure a brief 2-1 advantage for the hosts.

However, the momentum shifted just before halftime when experienced forward Tjaronn Chery set up an equalizer for Koki Linsen in the final minute of the opening period. That late blow proved critical, setting the stage for a dominant second-half display by the Dutch visitors.

NEC capitalized immediately after the restart, with Linsen scoring his second goal of the night in the 54th minute following a tactical adjustment by the visiting side. Chery then sealed the victory in the 80th minute with a long-range strike, leaving Dinamo with too steep a mountain to climb in the closing stages.

Following the match, Dinamo head coach Mario Kovačević did not shy away from addressing his team's shortcomings, pointing specifically to the timing of the conceded goals. He expressed particular frustration over the goals allowed right before halftime and immediately after the intermission, noting that such lapses are unacceptable at this level of competition.

"Every defeat hurts and is difficult," Kovačević said during the post-match press conference. "The third goal is what angers me the most. Conceding at the very end of the first half and immediately at the beginning of the second is something that simply must not happen."

Kovačević defended his tactical approach and his starting center-back pairing of Scott McKenna and Sergi Domínguez, despite admitting that defensive frailties hurt his squad. He emphasized that the club remains committed to an attacking philosophy, noting that while Beljo has been in strong scoring form, other midfielders and wingers need to contribute more consistently.

Refusing to blame his players for a lack of effort, the Dinamo manager shouldered the blame entirely. "I am the coach, I am the main person responsible, and I will always be the culprit," Kovačević stated, looking ahead to future fixtures and expressing confidence that his squad can recover as their European campaign continues.
