Driver Killed in Collision With Milk Truck in Surwold

A 35-year-old car driver died early Sunday morning following a violent collision with a milk truck in Surwold, located in the Emsland district near Papenburg. According to local police reports, the fatal crash occurred at an intersection where the L62 highway crosses the B401.

The 35-year-old motorist was traveling on the L62 from Neubörger around 5:30 a.m. and intended to cross the B401. At the same time, a 42-year-old driver was operating a fully loaded milk tanker on the B401 traveling from Oldenburg toward Heede.

Upon reaching the intersection, the two vehicles collided with immense force. The impact completely destroyed the car and hurled it approximately 60 meters away from the point of impact. The driver suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following the crash, the milk truck broke through a guardrail and careened off the roadway, ultimately flipping over and landing on its roof in the ditch. The 42-year-old truck driver sustained minor injuries in the incident.

Emergency responders and law enforcement arrived quickly, prompting authorities to close the affected section of the B401 for several hours while rescue operations and initial investigations took place. The roadway remained restricted as crews worked to clear the wreckage.

Preliminary financial estimates place the total property damage resulting from the crash at more than 200,000 euros. The vehicle was completely ruined, and the milk tanker suffered extensive damage.

Local police have officially opened an investigation to determine the exact sequence of events and the precise cause of the collision. Investigators are currently reviewing the site details as inquiries continue.
