Fox News faced widespread mockery on social media after a reporter accidentally interviewed a vocal critic of President Donald Trump during a live broadcast from a campaign rally in Rock Hill, South Carolina. The broadcast captured a voter who explicitly compared the political gathering to a historical cult event.

During the Thursday event, reporter Lucas Tomlinson approached an attendee identified only as Tom to ask what brought him out to support the president ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. Instead of offering praise, the voter delivered an unexpected response.

"In the late '70s, I was a little too young to get involved and go to South America for the Jonestown Massacre. But this is as close as I'll ever get, so that's why I'm here," the voter told the network on live television. The Jonestown Massacre took place in 1978, resulting in the deaths of more than 900 members of the Peoples Temple cult in Guyana.

When a visibly confused Tomlinson asked him to clarify, the attendee doubled down on his remarks. "There's nothing like seeing a cult right up front, man," he stated. In hindsight, observers noted a distinct clue regarding the voter's intentions: he was wearing a bright yellow shirt with the word "DEATH" prominently displayed across it.

Realizing the mistake, Tomlinson quickly cut the interview short, laughing awkwardly and telling viewers that the man was likely not a Trump supporter before moving on to other attendees. The clip immediately circulated widely online, drawing amusement and commentary from users on social media platforms.

The unexpected television moment occurred as President Trump campaigned heavily in South Carolina to rally support for Republican candidates ahead of tight races in the midterm elections. Neither the network nor the campaign immediately issued further comments regarding the live broadcast incident.
