From War-Torn Ukraine to Hospital Therapy: The Journey of Ari the Dog
A dog that survived the war in Ukraine now serves as a therapy animal for hospitalized children in Argentina.
Ari, a canine survivor of the war in Ukraine, has found a new purpose far from his homeland by bringing emotional support to hospitalized children in Argentina. After being rescued from the conflict, the dog was brought to La Plata, where he underwent specialized training to become a therapy animal.
Currently, Ari works at the Sor María Ludovica Children's Hospital, where he interacts with young patients to support their emotional well-being during medical stays. The initiative is a collaborative effort involving the Office of the Ombudsman of the Buenos Aires Province, the Human-Animal Bond Observatory at the Arturo Jauretche National University, and the hospital itself.
Medical staff at the facility have noted noticeable improvements in the moods of the children since the program began. Elizabeth, a staff physician in the intermediate therapy ward, stated that interacting with the dog produces favorable responses and positive reinforcement for the patients.
Luisiana, Ari's handler, shared that the dog is deeply affectionate and relishes spending time outdoors during sunny hospital visits. After a day of connecting with patients, Ari typically spends his afternoons resting at home, balancing his duties with proper care and downtime.
The Office of the Ombudsman emphasized the value of integrating human-animal bonds into public health systems to foster more compassionate, patient-centered care. While the therapy sessions do not replace medical treatments, advocates point out that the program offers meaningful companionship for children undergoing extended care.
In a video shared by the ombudsman's office, Ari's story is told from his perspective. "My job is to give paws, receive cuddles, and make everyone smile," the organization shared on behalf of the therapy dog, highlighting the impact of his new mission.
