Gareth Batty Leaves Surrey to Join Chennai Super Kings as Assistant Coach
The former England off-spinner departs his role at Surrey after a disappointing campaign to join the Indian Premier League franchise ahead of the 2027 season.
Gareth Batty has officially stepped down as the head coach of Surrey following a difficult domestic campaign that saw the county finish seventh in the County Championship. Batty, who spent 21 years with Surrey as a player, club captain, and head coach, is transitioning to the Indian Premier League (IPL) to serve as an assistant coach for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
The 49-year-old former England international enjoyed immense success during the early years of his tenure in the dugout, leading Surrey to three consecutive County Championship titles from 2022 to 2024. However, the most recent season proved challenging for the domestic powerhouse. After finishing as runners-up in 2025, Surrey managed only two victories in 14 Championship matches last season, falling well short of expectations.
Reflecting on his departure after more than two decades with the club, Batty expressed deep gratitude for his time in Surrey. "Thank you hardly seems enough for all that Surrey has meant to me," Batty stated, adding that serving the club had been a privilege. He also expressed excitement about his upcoming chapter in the IPL alongside his family.
Alec Stewart, Surrey's director of men's cricket, acknowledged Batty's remarkable contributions and leadership during his tenure. While praising Batty's dedication and his ability to bring out the best in players, Stewart also noted the harsh reality of the recent results. "League tables don't lie," Stewart remarked earlier in the month, pointing out that the team's performance did not match its considerable talent.
Surrey's struggles last season were compounded by an ageing squad, inconsistent batting displays from key linchpins like Dominic Sibley and Ollie Pope, and a lack of depth and variety in their bowling attack. Furthermore, the squad lacked continuity as players frequently moved in and out due to international commitments, injuries, and T20 league engagements. In response to the disappointing campaign, the club has already begun reshaping its coaching staff, bringing in former Zimbabwe Test batsman Grant Flower from Sussex as the new batting coach.
At Chennai Super Kings, Batty will work alongside newly appointed head coach Zaheer Khan, who replaced Stephen Fleming. Batty and Khan share a professional history dating back to 2006, when the two played together for Worcestershire. The Chennai franchise is eager to revitalize its coaching staff as it targets a record sixth IPL title.
Batty's playing career included nine Test matches, 10 One-Day Internationals, and one T20 International for England between 2002 and 2016, during which he claimed 15 Test wickets and five ODI wickets. As he embarks on this international coaching venture in the IPL, Surrey will begin the search for a new head coach to lead the county forward.
