Gelsenkirchen Ice Hockey Team Returns to Action After 18-Year Hiatus
The Schalker Haie are back on the ice for their first official match in nearly two decades, highlighting a turbulent local sports history.
Ice hockey has officially returned to Gelsenkirchen after an 18-year hiatus, as the local Schalker Haie prepare to host their first official senior league match. The team is scheduled to face the Herforder Ice Dragons 1b in the sixth-tier Bezirksliga, marking a major milestone for a club with a long and winding history.
The revival of the team is tied to the reopening of the local Emscher-Lippe-Halle, which has resumed operations following a private operator's investment, volunteer efforts, and municipal funding. The arena has faced numerous disruptions over the years, most recently serving as a COVID-19 testing center in 2020 and subsequently housing refugees starting in 2022, forcing youth hockey programs to relocate to neighboring cities.
Hockey in Gelsenkirchen dates back to the early 1980s, experiencing fluctuations between the second and fourth tiers of German competition alongside recurring financial struggles. The club previously operated under various names, including ESV and EC Gelsenkirchen, before adopting its current EHC designation around the year 2000. Its senior team last competed during the 2007-2008 season, after which the organization was limited to youth and amateur squads.
The city's most famous hockey memory dates back to January 1995, when NHL superstar Jaromir Jagr played a single guest game for the Schalker Haie during an NHL lockout. Arranged through player-coach and longtime friend Peter Fiala, Jagr recorded a goal and ten assists in a match against Herne, reportedly asking for little more than a schnitzel with fries and mayonnaise.
Despite the excitement surrounding the team's comeback, the long-term future of the venue remains uncertain. The lease agreement for the ice arena is currently set for two years, after which the facility could potentially be demolished to make way for a new comprehensive school construction project.
Meanwhile, Gelsenkirchen is also seeing progress in other municipal infrastructure projects, including the city's planned central bath and educational campus. Construction on the site north of Florastraße is advancing, with the pouring of the concrete floor slab scheduled for November and an anticipated opening in the summer of 2028.
