Genoa Hands Disjointed Juventus a 2-0 Defeat in Serie A Action

First-half strikes by Kingsley Ehizibue and Tommaso Baldanzi left the Bianconeri six points adrift of the top four.

Genoa secured a decisive 2-0 victory over Juventus at Marassi in the ninth round of the Serie A season, delivering another severe blow to the Bianconeri's league campaign. Managed by Daniele De Rossi, the home side dominated the contest from the outset, scoring twice in the opening half-hour to secure all three points. The away defeat left Juventus trailing the Champions League qualification places by six points, compounding concerns over their inconsistent form under manager Luciano Spalletti.

Genoa established control early by winning individual duels and outpacing their visitors across the pitch. Kingsley Ehizibue opened the scoring in the 12th minute when his strike found the net following an awkward deflection off Juventus defender Andrea Cambiaso, which left goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario unable to intervene. The hosts doubled their advantage in the 28th minute after Juventus defender Pierre Kalulu lost possession to Vitinha. The turnover allowed Tommaso Baldanzi to finish smoothly and consolidate Genoa's commanding position before the interval.

Juventus offered little resistance in an uninspired first-half performance characterized by defensive lapses and limited attacking cohesion. Kalulu squandered an opportunity to halve the deficit by dragging a shot wide, while forward Randal Kolo Muani found himself repeatedly contained by Genoa's defensive pairing of Leo Ostigard and Johan Vasquez. Midfielders Douglas Luiz and Sarr struggled against the energy of the home side's central group, leaving the team disjointed in both possession and transition.

Spalletti attempted to alter the match's direction through several substitutions, replacing Alajbegovic and Federico Gatti at halftime with Edon Zhegrova and Nick Woltemade. Additional changes saw Jeremie Boga, Juan Cabal, and Teun Koopmeiners enter the pitch later in the second half. Although Juventus increased their attacking presence toward the end of regulation, Genoa goalkeeper Justin Bijlow maintained the clean sheet. Bijlow made a crucial stop against Jhon Lucumi, and Koopmeiners struck the crossbar on a stoppage-time free kick that bounced off the goal line without entering the net.

The shutout further magnified long-standing concerns regarding Juventus' attacking inefficiency this season. According to figures from Football Italia, Juventus possesses the second-weakest attack among the clubs currently in Serie A's top ten. Furthermore, through nine league fixtures, the team ranks 18th across the entire division in expected goals produced from open play. These numbers present a stark contrast to expectations following squad reinforcements, placing additional pressure on a defense and midfield that cannot rely on regular scoring contributions.

Following the final whistle, De Rossi expressed satisfaction with his squad's determination and tactical discipline. The Genoa manager lauded Baldanzi, calling him "a phenomenon" and explaining that he deployed him on the opposite flank specifically to isolate Lucumi. De Rossi also offered praise for his counterpart, noting that losing at a club with title ambitions creates immense scrutiny. He described Spalletti as "one of the greatest coaches in this landscape," adding that the experienced tactician possesses the ability to reverse the team's fortunes.

For Juventus, the defeat adds immediate urgency to their upcoming fixtures as they struggle to build momentum while managing a squad depleted by injuries. The Bianconeri have traditionally produced stronger results away at Genoa, making the manner of the defeat particularly frustrating for supporters. With a high-stakes encounter against Napoli approaching in their next league match, Spalletti faces the critical task of revitalizing his attack and preventing the club from drifting further away from European contention.
