Juventus Weighs Coaching Options as Celta Vigo Prepares for Europa League Clash

While Juventus evaluates potential managerial changes for the future, Celta Vigo gets ready to face Celtic in a crucial European fixture.

Juventus head coach Luciano Spalletti is facing mounting pressure at the Italian club following a sluggish start to the 2026-27 Serie A campaign, securing only 11 points from their first seven matches with three wins, two draws, and two losses. Despite the difficult beginning, club directors and ownership are reportedly unwilling to replace Spalletti mid-season, as he remains under contract at the Allianz Stadium until 2028. However, multiple sources indicate that stance could change if results fail to improve in the coming months, which might lead the Bianconeri to install a caretaker coach such as Stefano Pioli or Antonio Conte.

Looking further ahead toward the 2027-28 season, former Inter Milan and Lazio boss Simone Inzaghi has emerged as a strong candidate to take over if Spalletti does not meet the minimum target of UEFA Champions League qualification. Inzaghi, currently managing Al-Hilal, is widely respected for his top-flight experience, having guided Inter to the Serie A title in the 2023-24 season alongside two Coppa Italia trophies and three Supercoppa Italiana titles, plus reaching the Champions League final in 2023 and 2025.

Meanwhile, Celta Vigo is turning its attention to continental competition as the Spanish side prepares to face Celtic at Celtic Park in the UEFA Europa League. Both clubs enter Thursday night's matchup searching for their first points of the league phase after losing their opening two fixtures. Claudio Giráldez's Celta side currently sits 29th in the standings following narrow, single-goal defeats to Omonia and Juventus, though their domestic La Liga form has been significantly stronger with seven points from their last three outings.

Celta's recent European schedule included a hard-fought 2-1 home loss against Juventus, where Hugo Álvarez scored the club's lone goal in this season's competition. Álvarez, along with players like Ilaix Moriba and Ferran Jutglà, is expected to feature in the starting line-up as Celta looks to reverse its fortunes on the road in Scotland. Historically, Celta has struggled during away trips to Scotland in major European play, losing both of previous encounters against Aberdeen in 1971 and Celtic in 2002.

Their opponents on Thursday, Celtic, are enduring a difficult European run under manager Martin O'Neill. After opening the group stage with a 3-1 home defeat to Ferencváros followed by a 4-1 loss against Benfica in Lisbon, the Scottish side has dropped three straight continental matches while conceding 12 goals across those fixtures. Consequently, Celtic currently occupies 34th place in the 36-team table, and the atmosphere at Celtic Park may feature empty seats as a portion of the fanbase continues a boycott against club ownership.

Despite their continental struggles, Celtic enter the match brimming with confidence domestically after thrashing Hearts 7-1 over the weekend. O'Neill remains steadfast that his squad can rescue their European campaign, despite facing injury concerns. Cameron Carter-Vickers remains sidelined with a strain, and Alistair Johnston is nearing a return from a hamstring problem, while forward Camilo Durán aims to continue his solid form after scoring in each of his last two matches.

Thursday's match marks only the second time in history that Celtic and Celta Vigo have squared off in official competition. Their only previous meetings occurred during the third round of the UEFA Cup in the 2002-03 season, when O'Neill was also in his first stint as Celtic manager and advanced on away goals before eventually reaching the tournament's final in Seville.
