Global Explorer Completes Historic 28-Year Journey On Foot

Fifty-six-year-old Karl Bushby returned to his family home in Britain on Monday after spending 28 years becoming the first person to walk continuously around the world. A former paratrooper, Bushby set off from the southern tip of Chile in November 1998 on what was originally intended to be a 12-year trip by foot through the Americas, across the Bering Strait into Russia, and onward into Europe.
During his extraordinary 36,000-mile journey, Bushby traversed four continents and visited 29 countries. His progress faced numerous significant obstacles along the way, including an arrest in Russia over unfounded espionage allegations that carried threats of deportation. He also encountered a polar bear, was held at gunpoint, and had to replace his equipment trolley after it broke down.
The final stretch of the expedition culminated when Bushby walked the last few miles from Hull City Hall to his mother's home, greeting her for the first time in 28 years. Reflecting on the long-awaited family reunion, Angela Bushby humorously asked, "Where have you been?" Renowned German filmmaker Werner Herzog attended the gathering as well, as he is currently planning a documentary about the adventurer's historic expedition.
While Bushby's epic trek concluded a legendary chapter of long-distance walking, walking also featured prominently in other recent developments across sports, business, and personal reflection. In Major League Baseball, the Seattle Mariners hired Jason Kanzler as their new manager for the 2027 season, stepping into a high-pressure role following a disappointing 76-86 campaign.
Kanzler takes over a talented roster that includes standout prospects and a strong core, inheriting a situation where expectations remain high after the team's successful 2025 run. The managerial change comes as the organization looks to bounce back and return to contention in the American League under new leadership.
In professional football, Kansas City Chiefs fans recently debated potential trade scenarios and roster moves, including fan discussions surrounding whether the team should retain or let wide receiver Rashee Rice walk at the end of the season.
Meanwhile, in the business and technology sector, micromobility startup Also quietly walked away from an electric two-wheeler pilot project in Kenya earlier in the year. The company, which was spun out from Rivian in 2025, chose to shift its resources and focus primarily on consumer e-bike development and autonomous vehicle ambitions.
On a personal level, the timeless benefits of a simple walk continue to resonate deeply for many individuals seeking mental clarity and peace away from the constant noise of modern technology and daily responsibilities.
