Global Oil Prices Rise Amid Middle East Tensions and Refinery Attacks
Brent crude climbed above $115 a barrel as renewed conflicts and maritime incidents fueled supply concerns.
Global oil prices increased during early Friday trading, with Brent crude climbing past $115 per barrel amid heightened tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and renewed attacks on energy infrastructure in the Middle East. Brent crude futures rose by 86 cents, or 0.75 percent, reaching $115.74 a barrel. Meanwhile, US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) advanced by 72 cents, or 0.71 percent, to $102.72 a barrel.
Both major benchmarks were on track to record their fourth consecutive monthly gain. October figures indicated that Brent was set to rise by nearly 14 percent, while WTI headed for an approximate 15 percent increase. The upward price movement reflects growing anxieties regarding international energy supplies as regional conflicts persist.
Maritime authorities and military sources reported multiple incidents in the strategic Strait of Hormuz. According to Iran's armed forces, four oil tankers caught fire after striking mines while navigating the waterway. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps stated that three violating vessels exploded following unauthorized transit attempts, while the Iranian army reported a fourth vessel struck mines east of the strait in a restricted zone.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations also confirmed receiving reports of vessels on fire and impacted by unknown projectiles in the region. These developments followed recent attacks claimed by Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi movement, which targeted Saudi oil facilities, including refineries in Ras Tanura and Rabigh, as well as an Aramco installation in Abqaiq.
Diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the situation continue alongside military friction. Qatar's Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani recently conferred with UK Foreign Minister Ed Miliband regarding regional security. Qatar affirmed its support for initiatives ensuring freedom of maritime navigation and sustainable peace.
Meanwhile, political leaders addressed broader diplomatic and security concerns. US President Donald Trump stated in a radio interview that he believes the conflict involving Iran will soon conclude, emphasizing the necessity of guarantees against nuclear weapons development. Conversely, Iranian officials maintained that progress in negotiations requires adherence to specific national conditions, rejecting the application of coercive pressure.
