Holstein Kiel Upsets TSG Hoffenheim in DFB-Pokal Penalty Shootout
The second-division club advanced to the round of 16 after prevailing 4-3 on penalty kicks.
Holstein Kiel secured a major upset in the second round of the DFB-Pokal on Wednesday, October 28, knocking out Bundesliga side TSG Hoffenheim. The two clubs remained locked in a 1-1 deadlock through regulation and extra time before the second-tier hosts held their composure in the penalty shootout, claiming a 4-3 victory to advance to the round of 16.
Hoffenheim manager Christian Ilzer entered the match with a strong lineup that featured Luca Philipp in goal, supported by defenders Valentin Gendrey, Robin Hranác, Koki Machida, and Bernardo Júnior. The midfield and attack featured Wouter Burger, Leon Avdullahu, Andrej Kramaric, Adam Hlozek, Alexander Prass, and Tim Lemperle. Despite the talent deployed on the pitch, the top-flight squad was unable to break down Holstein Kiel during open play.
The 1-1 draw forced the match into extra time, but neither side could find a decisive goal, ultimately sending the tie to spot kicks. Holstein Kiel converted four of their efforts while Hoffenheim managed three, sealing an unexpected elimination for the first-division club and sparking celebrations for the home supporters.
Hoffenheim was not the only elite club to stumble on Wednesday. Top-tier Schalke 04 also suffered an early exit from the cup, losing 2-0 on the road against second-division side Dynamo Dresden. Other prominent Bundesliga sides have already been sent packing from the tournament this season, including Werder Bremen, Mainz, Union Berlin, Hamburger SV, and Elversberg.
While Hoffenheim struggled, several other Bundesliga teams navigated their second-round assignments successfully. Bayern Munich earned a comfortable 6-1 victory against Magdeburg, Bayer Leverkusen overcame Nuremberg 5-2, and Freiburg edged out Wolfsburg 3-2. In an all-Bundesliga matchup, Stuttgart secured a late 1-0 win away to Paderborn, with captain Deniz Undav scoring in the 90th minute to punch their ticket to the next phase alongside lower-tier qualifiers like Hertha Berlin, Kaiserslautern, Bochum, and Darmstadt.
Following their cup elimination, Hoffenheim must quickly redirect their focus back to league competition. The team is scheduled to visit Werder Bremen this Saturday at the Weserstadion on Match Day eight of the Bundesliga. Hoffenheim currently sits in 11th place in the league table with nine points, while Werder Bremen holds fifth place with 12 points despite also coming off a midweek cup defeat, having lost 3-2 to Borussia Dortmund.
Ilzer faces notable roster challenges ahead of the weekend fixture. Hoffenheim will be missing Patrick Wimmer due to a hamstring injury, Albian Hajdari with a foot injury, Nathan De Cat with a meniscus problem, and Luis Engelns, who remains ineligible. Werder Bremen also enters the contest with extensive squad issues, missing key players such as Felix Agu, Olivier Deman, Niklas Stark, and Jens Stage.
Historically, Werder Bremen and Hoffenheim have maintained an evenly matched rivalry, with Bremen winning 14 of their 36 total encounters compared to 12 wins for Hoffenheim. Although Hoffenheim has demonstrated consistent goal-scoring form away from home in recent outings, their failure to hold off Holstein Kiel puts them under pressure to respond immediately as they return to Bundesliga play.
