Indiana Football Seeks Recovery Against Michigan After Ohio State Defeat

The No. 6 Hoosiers look to bounce back in Ann Arbor following a narrow 19-15 loss to Ohio State that snapped their long winning streak.

Indiana football is aiming to rebound this weekend in Ann Arbor against Michigan after suffering a narrow 19-15 defeat against No. 3 Ohio State. The setback snapped a 22-game winning streak for the Hoosiers, who had a final chance to steal a victory on their last offensive drive when quarterback Josh Hoover targeted Nick Marsh in the end zone. However, the potential game-winning touchdown pass was ruled incomplete by mere inches when the receiver's first step landed out of bounds with just over a minute remaining.

Indiana head coach Curt Cignetti acknowledged that his team failed to execute at its usual high standard during the hard-fought contest. "We fell short, plain and simple," Cignetti stated. "Gave great effort and had our opportunities, for sure. In some ways, we beat ourselves -- which is uncharacteristic of this football team. But I certainly think we proved we're capable. We just have to clean up a couple areas and use this setback to learn and grow, come back stronger and better."

The recent loss to Ohio State marked the second consecutive week that Indiana's prominent running game struggled to generate significant yardage against a defense committed to stopping the run. The Hoosiers managed only 73 yards on 29 carries against the Buckeyes, following a similar performance against Nebraska where they totaled 65 rushing yards. Cignetti emphasized the need for more consistent production moving forward, noting that the team has not produced explosive plays in the ground game over the past two weeks.

Despite the offensive struggles, the Hoosiers enter the upcoming matchup against the Wolverines with a remarkably clean injury report. The Big Ten released its initial availability report, revealing that Indiana did not list a single player. This empty report signals the anticipated return of running back Khobie Martin, who missed six consecutive games due to an arm injury. Starting quarterback Josh Hoover also appears ready to play without lingering limitations after dealing with physical discomfort during the closing moments against Ohio State.

In contrast to Indiana's health, Michigan reported 15 players on its availability list, with seven already ruled out for the Saturday clash. The Wolverines enter the game with offensive momentum following a 21-18 comeback victory over Penn State. After trailing at halftime, Michigan benched sophomore quarterback Bryce Underwood in favor of freshman Tommy Carr, who directed the team to three second-round touchdowns and rushed for a decisive score late in the fourth quarter.

Beyond the gridiron, Ohio State and Indiana also recently met on the soccer pitch, where the No. 4 Hoosiers secured a 1-0 victory over the Buckeyes thanks to a goal from junior forward Easton Bogard. Ohio State head coach Brian Maisonneuve expressed frustration after his squad out-shot their opponents but failed to convert their scoring opportunities. The latest cross-sport matchups continue a competitive stretch between the two Big Ten institutions as the fall athletic schedule nears its conclusion.
