Ohio State secured a hard-fought 19-15 victory against Indiana to halt the Hoosiers' 22-game winning streak, but the triumph came at a heavy cost for the program. The game, played in Bloomington, featured intense defensive stands, penalties, and sloppiness before culminating in a dramatic final sequence where Indiana threw a potential game-winning pass into the end zone with just over a minute remaining. Hoosier wide receiver Nick Marsh stepped out of bounds before catching the ball, sealing the win for the visiting team.

With the victory, the Buckeyes improved their record to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in Big Ten conference play. Despite the positive outcome in the standings, Ohio State's offense struggled throughout the afternoon, compiling only 313 total yards. The real blow to the team, however, occurred late in the fourth quarter when starting quarterback Julian Sayin was sacked by defensive lineman Mario Landino and sustained an injury to his throwing arm.

On Tuesday, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day delivered a grim update to reporters during his weekly media availability, announcing that Sayin is sidelined indefinitely with an elbow injury. Day declined to provide a specific recovery timeline and acknowledged that the coaching staff is preparing contingency plans for the remainder of the season without their star signal-caller, which could extend through both the regular season and the postseason.

“We're not going to put any timeline on his recovery, but he is out indefinitely,” Day stated. He added that the program is giving Sayin and his family privacy and space as they navigate the medical evaluation process.

Sayin, a former five-star recruit and a Heisman Trophy finalist last season, has started 21 consecutive games for Ohio State. Prior to the injury, he threw for 235 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions against Indiana, bringing his season totals to 2,007 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, and four interceptions. His prolonged absence is also expected to impact wide receiver Jeremiah Smith's Heisman campaign, as Smith has served as the team's primary offensive weapon this year.

As the Buckeyes enter a bye week, the coaching staff is evaluating options to fill the vacancy at quarterback. True freshman Luke Fahey replaced Sayin against Indiana to close out the contest, edging out former five-star recruit Tavien St. Clair for the primary backup role heading into the season. Day noted that both quarterbacks will receive extensive repetitions during the bye week to determine the best path forward.

“Going into the last few games, Luke’s been ahead of Tavien in terms of what we’ve seen, but now that we have a bye week, these guys are both gonna get a lot of reps, and we’re gonna start to put together a plan on how we’re gonna move forward,” Day explained. “We’re gonna play the guy that gives us the best chance to win.”

Ohio State faces a challenging schedule ahead as they attempt to navigate the remainder of the season without their starting quarterback. Following the bye week, the team will travel on the road to face the USC Trojans, followed by home matchups against Oregon and Northwestern.
