Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr. is facing a misdemeanor charge for marijuana possession following a traffic stop in Carmel, Indiana, earlier this month, according to court documents.

A Carmel Police Department officer pulled over Richardson's black Dodge Charger on October 12 near the intersection of Springmill Boulevard and Silver Stream Drive. The stop was initiated after the officer noticed that the vehicle's license plate did not correspond with its registration information and that the registration had expired.

According to a probable cause affidavit shared with ESPN by the Hamilton County prosecutor's office, the officer detected a strong odor of marijuana immediately upon approaching the vehicle, where Richardson was the sole occupant.

The affidavit states that Richardson told the officer he had used marijuana in the car to avoid smoking in front of his children and acknowledged that a small quantity of the substance was inside.

During the subsequent investigation, officers searched the car and recovered approximately five grams of marijuana stored in a small Mason jar, along with an opened bag of THC-infused gummies located in the glove compartment. The suspected marijuana subsequently tested positive for THC.

Richardson received a citation for the expired vehicle registration and a summons for the marijuana possession charge. Court records indicate that he opted to waive his initial hearing, and a bench trial has been scheduled for January 4.

The Indianapolis Colts released a brief statement regarding the legal matter, noting that the organization is aware of the situation and currently gathering additional information while declining further comment at this time.

The charge compounds a difficult period for the franchise, which recently dismissed general manager Chris Ballard amid a challenging 2-4 start to the season under head coach Shane Steichen.
