Jonathan Kuminga Contributes in Timberwolves Debut Over Heat
Jonathan Kuminga scored 12 points in his first game with Minnesota, helping the team secure a 131-106 victory against Miami.
Jonathan Kuminga made his official debut for the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday night, contributing 12 points to help his new squad secure a commanding 131-106 victory over the Miami Heat. The matchup also marked the debut of Giannis Antetokounmpo with Miami, though the visiting Timberwolves quickly took control of the game.
Minnesota entered the new season with high expectations following a roster overhaul that brought in Kuminga and LaMelo Ball, while parting ways with players like Julius Randle and Naz Reid. Analysts like former coach Stan Van Gundy have expressed skepticism regarding whether the new personnel mix makes the Timberwolves better suited to contend with Western Conference powerhouses like Denver, Houston, San Antonio, and Oklahoma City, but the opening night performance provided a strong offensive display.
During Wednesday's contest, Anthony Edwards led the charge for Minnesota by netting 45 points and hitting nine three-pointers, joining Wilt Chamberlain and Michael Jordan as the only players in league history to score at least 40 points in multiple season openers. LaMelo Ball added 21 points in his own debut with the franchise, while Jaden McDaniels chipped in 17 points and Ayo Dosunmu contributed 16.
Kuminga's role heading into the season has centered on utilizing his athleticism to attack the basket, run the floor, and provide defensive energy and rebounding. Having previously spent time with Golden State and Atlanta before being traded at the February deadline, Kuminga aimed to find his offensive rhythm alongside primary creators like Edwards and Ball without forcing plays.
The game remained competitive early on, but Minnesota seized control during a decisive stretch spanning late in the second quarter and early into the third. A 23-7 run transformed a narrow one-point lead into a comfortable 78-61 advantage, powered heavily by the combined scoring of Edwards and Ball while Miami struggled with turnovers and missed shots.
Although Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 35 points before eventually fouling out in his first appearance for the Heat, and Bam Adebayo added 15 points, Miami could not close the gap. Minnesota extended its lead further with a subsequent 45-23 burst, dominating the three-point battle by outscoring the hosts 63-24 from beyond the arc and securing a 52-34 rebounding edge led by Rudy Gobert's 15 boards.
For Kuminga, the debut offered a promising glimpse of how his skill set can fit into the team's rotation as the season progresses. With the Timberwolves claiming victory in their sixth season opener out of their last eight, Kuminga and his teammates will look to build on this momentum when they visit Orlando on Friday.
