Timberwolves Defeat Heat as Rudy Gobert Shines On and Off the Court
Minnesota opened the season with a commanding 131-106 victory over Miami, highlighted by strong performances and a viral sideline exchange.
The Minnesota Timberwolves secured a dominant 131-106 victory over the Miami Heat on Wednesday night in Miami, showcasing a stellar team performance that overshadowed the much-anticipated debut of Giannis Antetokounmpo.
During the broadcast, Minnesota center Rudy Gobert caught attention with both his play and a humorous moment with ESPN analyst Richard Jefferson. When Jefferson asked the big man on air why he was smiling, Gobert promptly replied, "I'm thinking about your bald head."
The lighthearted exchange quickly circulated on social media, giving fans a rare glimpse into the humor of the four-time Defensive Player of the Year. Gobert had plenty of reasons to be in high spirits as his squad cruised to an early-season blowout win.
On the court, Gobert contributed five points, hauling in 15 rebounds and recording one assist. Although he attempted just two field goals and struggled from the field, missing both attempts, he capitalized at the charity stripe by sinking five of eight free throws.
Gobert noted that facing a tough matchup against formidable frontcourt defenders like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo limited his offensive opportunities. He aims to secure more involvement and lob opportunities as the season progresses, with the team looking ahead to a Friday matchup against the Orlando Magic.
While Gobert dominated the boards, his teammates carried the heavy scoring load. Anthony Edwards stole the spotlight with a franchise-record 45 points and 10 rebounds for a season opener, including 36 points through three quarters and seven three-pointers.
Meanwhile, Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 35 points on 13-of-19 shooting in his first game since joining Miami following a June trade from the Milwaukee Bucks. LaMelo Ball added 21 points and six assists in his debut for Minnesota after arriving via trade from the Charlotte Hornets, while Bam Adebayo contributed 15 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals for Miami.
The impressive victory gives the Timberwolves an early statement win as they prepare to host their home opener at the Target Center on Sunday, October 25.
