Kai Pflaume Attempts Live TV Marathon Record on Quiz Show
The popular television host is taking on an unprecedented endurance challenge by running a full marathon inside a studio during a broadcast.
Television host Kai Pflaume is undertaking an ambitious and unusual endurance challenge on Monday, November 2, 2026, by attempting to run a marathon live on television during the season premiere of his quiz show "Wer weiß denn sowas?" in Germany. The broadcast, titled "Wer weiß denn sowas? – Der Live-Weltrekord," turns the television studio into a racetrack as the 59-year-old host attempts to set a Guinness World Record for the longest distance ever covered while hosting a television program.
Pflaume aims to complete the official marathon distance of 42.195 kilometers, which will require him to run approximately 1,400 laps around a 30-meter circuit inside the studio. While he regularly covers this distance outdoors, doing so in a confined indoor space while simultaneously guiding celebrity guests and team captains through complex trivia questions presents a completely different level of difficulty.
The physical and mental demands of the challenge have drawn attention from sports experts. Professor Ingo Froböse, a sports scientist, warned about the high physiological and biomechanical stress placed on the host's joints due to the continuous tight curves of the short studio track. Froböse noted that running in a constant curve increases pressure on the hips, pelvis, ankles, and inner knees, and cautioned that maintaining high cognitive focus while managing fatigue will be a major obstacle.
To mitigate some of the physical strain, Pflaume plans to change his running direction approximately every 30 minutes. He acknowledged the severity of the undertaking ahead of the broadcast, stating that it requires a very strong day to maintain high energy levels and concentration. He also expressed hope that his joints would hold up throughout the grueling six-hour effort required to complete the full distance.
Pflaume will not be navigating the broadcast alone. Team captains Bernhard Hoëcker and Wotan Wilke Möhring are scheduled to assist as track helpers during the event while continuing to compete in the quiz alongside their guests. Additionally, an official representative from Guinness World Records is present on set to independently monitor and verify the record attempt.
The broadcast begins at 6:00 PM local time on the network Das Erste with a double episode. Following the initial television window at 7:40 PM, the live coverage will continue exclusively via the ARD Mediathek streaming platform. Regular episodes of the quiz show are scheduled to resume the following day on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
