Katie Boulter Advances to Hong Kong Open Last 16 After Overcoming On-Court Frustrations

The British number one secured a straight-sets victory against Viktorija Golubic despite a mid-match dispute with the umpire.

British tennis player Katie Boulter successfully advanced to the second round of the Hong Kong Open on Monday, defeating Switzerland's Viktorija Golubic in straight sets. The world number 49 secured the victory with a final score of 6-2, 7-6 (7-2), maintaining her momentum following a strong performance at last month's Japan Open.

The match was not without its challenges for the eighth-seeded Boulter. While holding a 5-2 lead in the second set, the British number one experienced a significant disruption when a noise from outside the court distracted her during a point. Boulter expressed her frustration to the umpire after the official declined to have the point replayed, an incident she later admitted "got under my skin."

This moment of contention appeared to unsettle the 30-year-old, who subsequently dropped her serve twice while attempting to close out the match. Boulter acknowledged that the late-season fatigue may have contributed to her reaction, noting that she is typically better at ignoring such distractions. "It was interesting. I was playing some really good tennis. I feel like I should have closed it out but a couple of things happened," she said following the match.

Despite the second-set wobble, Boulter regained her composure to force a tiebreak, which she dominated to seal the win. Reflecting on the experience, she described the match as a "lesson learned" and expressed relief at having managed to navigate the difficult moments to secure the victory. She is now set to face American Claire Liu in the round of 16.

The tournament also saw further struggles for veteran star Venus Williams, who extended her singles losing streak to 17 matches. The 46-year-old seven-time Grand Slam champion was defeated by 23-year-old American Mary Stoiana in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Williams, who currently relies on wildcards for tournament entries, has not recorded a singles victory on the WTA Tour since July 2025.

In other tennis news, British number two Cameron Norrie achieved a notable victory at the Rolex Paris Masters. Norrie defeated Italy's Matteo Arnaldi 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, marking his first ATP Tour win since August. The 31-year-old, who had been struggling with a five-match losing streak earlier in the season, stated that he is focused on enjoying his time on the court and playing with a renewed sense of freedom as he prepares for his next match against American Ben Shelton.
