King Charles Addresses Slavery Legacy During Caribbean Tour
The British monarch expressed profound personal sorrow over the slave trade while Prince Harry and Meghan Markle reportedly relocated closer to royal estates.
King Charles expressed profound personal sorrow regarding the historical role of his ancestors in the transatlantic slave trade during an address at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Antigua and Barbuda. Speaking on Tuesday, November 3, the 77-year-old monarch acknowledged the painful legacy of slavery across the Commonwealth, describing the historical chapter as one that fills his heart with horror and his soul with profound personal sorrow. Palace officials previously noted that while the King would acknowledge the past, he would stop short of an issuing a direct apology or offering reparations.
The British ruler is the first reigning monarch to publicly address the legacies of slavery and its impact in over two decades. During his speech, he emphasized the importance of learning from a past that cannot be changed while focusing on modern partnerships. He highlighted ongoing efforts to improve access to education, invest in job opportunities, and encourage intra-Commonwealth trade to address historical wrongs and support those facing hardship.
Bound by constitutional rules, the monarch cannot make policy promises or issue formal apologies without clearance from the British government. Despite looming demands for reparations and apologies from various groups and protests during royal Caribbean tours, King Charles reiterated his long-standing commitment to acknowledging the immense suffering caused by the British Empire. Previously, while visiting Osu Castle in Ghana as Prince of Wales in 2018, he remarked that the profound injustice of that legacy left an indelible stain on global history.
As King Charles continues his official duties, family developments have also brought attention to the British royal family. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle reportedly left their home in Montecito, California, this past August and relocated to a friend's estate in the Cotswolds area of the United Kingdom. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, along with their children Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, moved to a property on the estate after initially staying in the main residence.
The relocation comes as the couple seeks to live closer to King Charles, who has been undergoing cancer treatment following a diagnosis in February 2024. Royal experts previously indicated that Prince Harry intended to house hunt near Highgrove House, the residence shared by King Charles and Queen Camilla in Gloucestershire. Meanwhile, the couple's children are currently attending school in the country while maintaining their California property.
Amid these transitions, Prince Harry has continued to express a desire to mend relationships with his family, including his father and estranged brother, Prince William. In a recent interview, the Duke of Sussex emphasized the importance of family reconciliation, noting that letting go of past grievances is a relatable issue for many people as the royal family navigates both public duties and private dynamics.
