Kylian Mbappe Leads Real Madrid Past Barcelona in El Clasico
A decisive late goal from the French forward secured a 2-1 victory for Real Madrid at the Spotify Camp Nou.
Real Madrid defeated FC Barcelona 2-1 at the Spotify Camp Nou in an intense La Liga fixture, thanks to a brace from Kylian Mbappe. The victory on Saturday cuts Barcelona's lead at the top of the table to just three points after ten matches, handing Hansi Flick's side their first domestic defeat of the season in front of 62,055 spectators.
Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho deployed a tactical setup designed to concede possession and strike in transition. Operating in a 4-2-3-1 formation, Mourinho placed Federico Valverde at right-back to counter Anthony Gordon, while Marc Cucurella was tasked with shadowing Lamine Yamal. Bernardo Silva and Arda Guler reinforced the midfield alongside Aurelien Tchouameni and Jude Bellingham.
Barcelona controlled 62 percent of the possession and dominated the passing statistics, but struggled to break down a disciplined Real Madrid defensive block. The home side suffered an early blow in the 30th minute when right-back Xavi Espart sustained a thigh injury and was replaced by Alejandro Balde, forcing Joao Cancelo to shift to the right flank.
The opening goal arrived against the run of play in the 41st minute. Bernardo Silva released Yan Diomande down the left flank, and his low cross deflected off Gerard Martín and inadvertently off Mbappe's knee past goalkeeper Joan Garcia to break the deadlock.
Barcelona found an equalizer shortly after the interval in the 61st minute. Following a short corner kick, Pedri delivered a disguised pass to Raphinha, who fired a cross-shot past stand-in goalkeeper Andriy Lunin to level the score at one.
As both teams pushed for a winner in the closing stages, Mourinho introduced fresh legs, including Eduardo Camavinga in the 80th minute. The decisive moment came in the 87th minute when Bellingham and Guler combined to release Camavinga down the right, and the French midfielder drove into the penalty area before squaring the ball for Mbappe to tap into an unguarded net.
The 1-2 loss marks Barcelona's second consecutive defeat across all competitions within five days, ending a long home winning streak. Meanwhile, the victory revitalizes Real Madrid's campaign, moving them within three points of the league leaders and one point behind Atletico Madrid.
