Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Sees New Business Plans and Coast Guard Arrests
Local business associations launch revitalization efforts while authorities intercept illegal fuel operations off the southern coast.
The commercial district of Triana in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has introduced a fresh strategic plan and a renewed brand identity aimed at supporting local business owners and boosting economic activity. Marc Llobet, president of the Triana commercial zone, presented the new initiative alongside regional officials, emphasizing the need to strengthen ties with the area's merchant community. The association currently represents 170 members, a fraction of the 730 local commercial establishments operating in the neighborhood.
The new campaign, titled 'Somos Triana,' introduces a dedicated representative whose role is to visit local shops directly and demonstrate the value of association membership. Llobet noted that small retailers continue to face significant financial strain due to high inflation, narrow profit margins, and competition from digital shopping platforms. In response to these challenges, the strategy seeks to unify business owners across the broader district beyond just the main street.
City and island authorities are supporting the commercial revitalization through infrastructure and promotional plans. Minerva Alonso, the regional minister of economic development and commerce, stated that backing the merchant association forms part of the island's broader dynamization program. Meanwhile, business leaders have urged municipal officials to maintain open vehicle traffic on key streets during the upcoming holiday shopping season to protect retail revenue.
In a separate development, law enforcement officials detained six individuals, including three minors, for alleged illegal fuel transfers off the southern coast of Gran Canaria. The Civil Guard intercepted the suspects during a maritime operation near San Bartolomé de Tirajana after spotting two vessels engaged in suspicious transfers at sea, a practice locally known as petaqueo.
Authorities deployed a maritime patrol boat to intercept the vessels after observing multiple transfers of fuel containers. Officers boarded a cabin cruiser heading toward the open sea and detained three people on board. Shortly afterward, a second semi-rigid boat was intercepted near Anfi del Mar, resulting in three additional arrests.
Following the interception, the cabin cruiser began taking on water as it was towed to the port of Mogán, requiring emergency pumping and offloading operations by the authorities. Officials recovered a total of 198 filled containers holding an estimated 4,500 to 5,000 liters of gasoline. The detained suspects were subsequently transferred to the main Civil Guard post in Puerto Rico for further legal proceedings.
In sports news, the local professional football team prepares for an upcoming home fixture under mounting pressure. The squad aims to reverse a challenging run of results and distance itself from the relegation zone in an upcoming match at the Gran Canaria Stadium.
